A Secret That Can Transform Your Singing Voice
Glad you made it to watch my videos!
This one reveals a small “tweak” you can make to give you FAR more freedom.
It will also help you sing your high notes with ease, as well as produce better tone quality.
As you’ll see, getting this right will set the foundation for developing a spectacular voice!
Also, if you’d like to find out more about my Singing Made Simple technique, click below for the full story.
Wow thanks Roger. I’m experimenting with it now and I’m hearing a difference already! I’m going to take your advice and do the exercise over a song. I think that will really help a lot.
Great video.
Thank you so much! It thrills me to know that they are helping others. I struggled for quite a while which is why I was driven to help others. There will be more!
Roger
Hi roger, i’m Fai, and i’ve been doing all of the exercise ever since i subscribed you AND WOW look what you did to my voice now…. i have no flems, and it improves my range and so many insights from you as well! Cant wait for your next video and congrats for your new blog! x)
Thank you so much, teacher! x)
Hi Fai:
Great news! Yes, you will have less phlegm as in many cases the body produces it when there is too much friction on the vocal cords. It will be so much fun for you when you won’t have to clear your throat as much. Best,
Roger
A great exercise that is doing miracles for me since I first saw it on your previous videos. Thanks so much for that and good luck with your new blog. Looking forward for new videos
Thanks.
Darko:
I’m so glad they’re helping. Keep watching
Best to you,
Roger
Thank you very much Roger this technique is very effective.
Thanks so much Eric and there will be more. The voice is an ever developing instrument.
Roger
I haven’t tried yet but I now that this is the part of my neck where I feel sore when I sing. I know this is going to help me.
Thank you very much.
Cesar:
When you start using them you will begin to feel the relaxation. The tension in your neck means that you been blocking your air a bit and trying to push the sound out. Don’t worry; I used to have the same problem. It will change.
Roger
Roger, thanks so much for your help. I’m looking forward to your next video. Congrats on you new page – it’s great!
Thanks so much Maureen. And there will be more to come.
Roger
Hi Roger. Many thanks for the lessons.I am an ex-pat Brit living in France. I have been performing/rocking all my life. I am 66 now and I started when I was 11.Recently I have had problems with my throat especially after a show. However, since I have been taking your lessons, the problems have disappeared and now my voice just goes on and on! I am so grateful to you my friend. Good luck in all you do mate!! Regards, Ashy
Ashy:
That’s so great to hear! You’ll also find that it will get even better over time. Your voice is developing a new coordination in the way you produce sound so it’s gets easier. Keep practicing
Roger
Hey Roger,
Your videos are really helpful, they’ve made it so much easier for me to sing. But i was wondering, do these warm ups and practises help all styles of singing or just a certain style?
Thanks!
Looking forward to your next video.
Hi Sophie:
I’m so glad you enjoyed they videos! Yes, these exercises are for all styles of singing and music. The main goal with all of them is to gain much more freedom and control of your voice. When you voice is functioning properly you will be surprised at how many different styles of music you’ll be able to sing. You’ll keep growing so just be patient.
Roger
Wow! Thanks a lot Roger. I’m testing it out now and I can sort of hear a difference
I love your videos, can’t wait till the next one!
Great! It really does work. Go back and worth with doing the exercise with the song and then sing the song itself. You’ll find that each time it gets better and better.
Roger
Thanks for the exercises online. We have a small group that gets together at Christmas to sing so you know how difficult it is for us to do this pleasurably to others.Your lessons have totally helped me to focus what I need to do to improve my voice besides singing more often. We are now going to present your lessons to the rest of the group. Thank you from all those that will be listening to us over the season. My entire life I have been wishing for the voice that would be enjoyable to others(not just me in the shower)Thanks again.
Hi Dianne:
You are quite welcome. You’ll also find that as the individual voices change the sound of the entire group will improve as well. While everyone’s voice is unique and may have their own special problems, little corrections can make a big difference for the group.
Best,
Roger
hello roger, i had a go ast doing the na na na with the thums under the chin
relly works wonder for me:)
many thanks
Roger:
You’re welcome. Remember you are breaking maybe years of some habits so it will continually get better.
Best,
Roger
Awesome exercises! Thank you
You’re welcome Heather. There will be more so just master each one as you go along.
Best,
Roger
Hello Roger,
Thank you for your tips. If i’d understood what you mean, you tell not to push the larynx down. But my english is not good enough to understand when you speak. Could you send me a text (in english of course)because I am more able to understand if I read.
Thanks a lot.
Renaude
Hi Renaude:
Sorry, I probably speak a little too quickly at times as well. The goal is to have they larynx stay more in place; not pushing it up or down. This will give you more freedom and ultimately control over your voice. Releasing the swallowing muscles helps to allow the larynx to stay more in place. It will make more sense in time so don’t worry.
Roger
hi…im a elvis impersonators,i was blocked at a certin range when i started watching your videos, they changed my whole show…i can do any song now,the tip that helped the most was to visualize the sound coming from the front of my face…with the nay ,nay,nay,..i dont know how to thank you…you are the only person who made this so simple and clear to the reg person..again…thanks…i look foward to the next video…steve mitchell…
Steve:
That is so great! It took me years to figure that one out as I was blocked just like you. You may find yourself thinking about it lot now as you’re practicing but it will become really natural in no time.
Best,
Roger
Roger,
Thanks so much for this one, I was having a little trouble with the tongue trills but this one is working great!
Thank you so much!
Hi Heather:
A lot of people have trouble with the tongue trill and some are not able to do it at all. It may be a genetic thing, meaning the way your body is built. If you can curl your tongue, pulling the sides in to the center, then you should be able to do it in time. If you cannot do that you probably won’t get the trill but you can just substitute doing other vowel sounds on the same exercise while putting your thumb under your jaw to make sure the muscles are coming down or tightening. More will come!
Roger
Hello. This exercise is way to advanced for me. All my life I have had a serious phobia about singing in front of others. Some of this fear is reality based as I have several learning disabilities including some in the music (listening and singing) areas. Secondary psychological syndromes, some of which resulted from mis-treating my learning disabilities, also now complicate the treatment.
Since I recently retired, I thought I might make some attempt to find out if I can sing at all, that is, can I actually reach the specific notes in the specific order required by a tune or melody. It is no coincidence that all my life I have preferred to listen to music without words (new age a few decades ago and mostly classical now).
I reached your page via google all-the-words: teach youself to sing at home for free. Being retired, I’m not able to pay for lessons and I am way too embarassed to do anything like this in front of any person.
Instead of the nay-nay-nay technique on your video, I need some very very very basic (perhaps pre-school?) methods to learn to hit specific notes or cords or whatever they are called. BTW, my whistling is about as off key as my voice, which suggests more minimal brain dysfunction in the music and hearing areas.
Can you suggest either a cheap book I can find used or preferably some online site which actually can “teach yourself to sing at home for free”?
Thank-you.
Chris:
First of all I have to get you to change your mind. You can do this. Everyone has a bit of embarrassment about singing, even the pros. It is our most personal form of self expression.
The first thing for you to do is to start to learn to hear yourself. Just focus on hearing the notes in the middle of your forehead; your third eye. Do this first many times without trying to sing anything. Then start to try and sing with it. You don’t necessarily have to do the nay, nay, nay but even just different vowel sounds. Be patient with yourself and each time you will start to be able to tell you’re starting to hear the notes. This is a very basic way to start. I have taken many people who thought they were tone deaf and changed that around. Keep trying and let me know if there is a difference. Your concentration will improve as well.
Roger
This was a great video. im a beganning singer and this is a big help! i look forward to your next video!
Thanks
Thanks Mike! Being a beginner is a great place to start because you probably have not developed a lot of bad habits. Keep practicing.
Roger
Roger, I did this one time and I already feel a difference in my current vocal “limits.” Thanks so much! Can’t wait for your next video!
Josh:
So glad it helped! You’ll keep getting more and more so don’t be surprised.
Best,
Roger
Roger,
Thank you! This blog is going to change the lives of so many performers out there. I’m grateful for everything that you’ve done for me.
Kasey you’re the best and we’ve only just begun.
Roger
Great video sir roger! Thanks for making this kind of video. I hope you could do more… especially on the ways of expanding the range of our voices.
I hope you could share some tips on choral singing, if you have it.. or is it the same with what you’re tackling. Well, i am starting to do your tips then.
Congratulations and more power!
God bless you
Hi Albert:
Thanks so much. With choral singing, just keep developing your voice as most time choir directors don’t have time to address each singers particular voice. Their main objective is just to get everyone to sound good together. You’ll start to hear your harmonies and blend much better as you develop.
There will be more videos as well.
Roger
Wow! this is so amazing. I will try to practice this type of warm up . I hope it will really help me to change my voice.. Thanks
Aldrin:
It will definitely help and you just need to be patient and persistent. It will grow continually over time.
Best,
Roger
Thank you Roger, as a singer, I appreciate your help with this exercise, I hope to hit my highest note, above the basement. Heheheheheheheh. Bless You.
Thanks so much Nance. You will hit them! Don’t push anything though and you will experience each time getting a bit more as your body gets accustomed to the new coordination.
Best,
Roger
This is very interesting and something I’ve never heard of before even though I’ve had some singing lessons!
I’m starting to believe that using my swallowing muscles is my main problem in singing. It might be the reason why I strain, can’t figure out head voice or mixed register (middle voice) and why I’m always forced to belt everything in chest voice. At the moment I can reach an A below high C in chest voice. It doesn’t sound nice, because I have to yell it. And I’m constantly out of breath when singing higher notes.
From now on I’ll do my best to figure out this exercise. I’ll post my progress.
Timothy:
Yes, everything you mentioned is a result of that problem. When those muscles are working they cut off your air. It will take time for them to relax completely as you’ve been using them for a while. Each time it will get better. Do post your progress.
Roger
thank you ..very cool
Amani..you’re quite welcome and thank you for you comment.
Roger
Before I start doing this more, I have to ask few questions (hopefully Roger or somebody else can answer me)
- Is the larynx supposed to stay put (not rising like when swallowing or going down like when yawning)? <– I believe it is supposed to, but I'd like to get a second opinion.
- Where exactly do I put my thumbs? Slightly above the larynx or on it?
- Is it possible to do this without feeling any movement in those muscles?
Timothy:
You place your thumbs under your jaw just so you can tell where those swallowing muscles are. You don’t need to place anything on the larynx itself. You can feel the muscles when you swallow and you can also feel them when you yawn and then you’ll also feel how they stop the air from flowing though. You will feel some movement but we just want to get to the place where they are not coming down too much or hard.
Hope that helps.
Roger
Great tip Roger. The power of simplicty! Thanks for sharing
Thanks for the comment Dino. More to come!
Roger
thanks thanks thanks!!! Godbless you Roger
You’re more than welcome JC.
Roger
I will certainly try this exercise. Thanks a lot.
Great. Keep trying with it Rakar. It keeps getting better.
Roger
Cool Roger-it’s nice to see experience people like yourself giving out advice to the masses.
Keep up the good work, but like Timothy I would just like to know, is there any possibility you might damage a muscle if done incorrectly?
PJ:
Thanks so much. It’s not that you will damage the muscle but with a lot of constriction over time it can cause damage to the vocal cords themselves. I’ll keep explain more in future videos.
Roger
Roger,
Thanks a million for your explanations.
Looking forward to your next video.
God bless you.
Thanks so much for your comment Humberto.
Roger
I am a little confused. I am not sure what we are supposed to be feeling with our thumbs and therefore what we are supposed to be “Not” doing with our swallowing muscles. When he says you can feel them “go down”, does he mean, the muscles push against the thumb or the muscles slide bank toward the throat?
Help?
Hi Andrea;
Yes, you feel them push down on the thumbs when they are too engaged. That it is what we’re trying to avoid. You will at times also get the feeling of the sound falling back in your throat when that is happening.
Hope that helps.
Roger
WOW!! Roger, I am really impressed at the ease of these exercises.ai can’t wait for your next video!!
Thanks Scott! I really appreciate your comment and knowing that it’s making a difference.
Roger
No sound! I’ve got my speakers at top volume / the video at top volume and
still no sound! Please advise.
Bea:
I’m not sure why that’s happening. You may be missing some plug ins. Maybe try using Internet Explorer, a new version, to access the site as it will have the right plug-ins.
Roger
You know, I always wondered how in the world someone could “learn” to sing. It seemed like you either can or you can’t. But this technique really makes sense and I know I haven’t noticed myself using those muscles before. I’m very interested to see what else you have up your sleeve.
Andrew;
I’ve always believed that anyone could learn to sing with the right guidance. I’ve taken many “non-singers” and turned them around. More to come!
Roger
Roger, thank you so much for your Help!!!
Thanks for sharing with these secrets with us!!
You’re a really good person
Thank you so much for your comment Sevda. Best to you,
Roger
I’m impressed. I can tell the difference in tension. When I use your exercise I don’t feel much tension on my vocals.
That’s great A. I know exactly what you mean as that was my problem in the beginning as well.
Best,
Roger
Thanks for taking the time to share this tip/exercise. I just sang the song I’m working on (Here 4 U) replacing the lyrics with nays and keeping my thumbs under my chin. I felt much more control over pitch and my sustain notes were much more clean and even. Now all I’ve got to do is get it sounding like that (with the lyrics) while the tape is rolling!
Phillip:
That’s great. Now what you can do is put your thumbs under you jaw, keep you mouth slightly closed and try to sing the words without those muscles coming down. This is an exercise so it won’t sound good while you’re doing it. Then release that and sing the song without your thumbs. Each time it will get better.
Best,
Roger
Roger thank you so much for the video, I’ve always thought my problem was a lack of air in my lungs and your video has helped so much I’am looking forward to your next video take care
Bill:
That happens for so many. You were probably blocking the air and as a result of that pulling your diaphragm in and restricting the air more. Keep practicing and you’ll be amazed at your new found air!
Roger
Great post I am so greatful you shared this video, the advice was well needed and I am going to do these exercises everyday. I have been working on taking my voice to the next level with good and healthy technique and this post is a blessing!
Ebony:
That’s perfect. Be careful not to overdo it and you’ll see that each day it gets better. Rest if you start to feel any strain and then resume with ease.
Best,
Roger
This was a great lesson..I love to sing and this has really improved my voice. Thanks your the best!!!!!!!
Keidra:
Thank you so much and I always want to know that my work is making a difference.
Roger
Hi, I’m Nikki, age fourteen, and this helped so much! I’m able to hit my higher notes like never before! I really, truly appreciate your help. Thanks a ton!
-Nikki
How great Nikki. Also, you’re at the perfect age to start applying these and your voice will also stay in great shape. Your voice recently changed and these will help you with that transition.
Best,
Roger
Amazing and exactly what I needed to hear. Thanks
Thanks Mary and exactly what I need to hear!
Best,
Roger
thnks ive nt tried bt will try it later. ure a nice person
Victory:
Thanks so much and let me know your progress.
Roger
Thanks Roger i will really put this to the test and i am sure it will help me alot in my rock band hope to someday sing like really good artists thanks
Hi Enrico:
You will! It just takes practice and persistence. You will surprise yourself.
Best,
Roger
Great exercise. Would like some techniques on voice projection and singing vowels.
Hi Frances:
Thank you. There will be more information on vowels but for now think that when your singing and especially going into your upper register that you want to vowels to stay thin or narrow. It is sometimes helpful to think that you will over pronounce them. Stay tuned.
Roger
We’ve been on the road for 27 years. Our son sent us an email with your videos. AWESOME! Thank you so much for making available such valuable information.
Len and Lois:
Thanks so much for your comment! Being on the road can be stressful so hopefully these videos will keep you in great shape.
Best,
Roger
Thanks and looking forward to the new videos! Is always important any kind of lessons or tips to improve the singing technique. Thank you!!!
Great Roberto. Yes, the voice will continually get better and develop more.
Roger

Hi Roger, thanks for the post I’m about to get singing lessons as I’m recording a son/single in the studio in January this year.
I want to be as good as I can get.
thanks a million
Love from England
Ralph
Ralph:
That’s great! There will be more tips that you will be able to use to practice your song before you record. Stay tuned.
Best,
Roger
Hi Rogers, this is Nelson fron Nigeria, I really want to say thanks you very much for that little exercise on the video, i must tell you that it has really improve my singing thanks
Glad it helped!
Roger
pls have a pitch problem
Nelson:
You don’t have a pitch problem you just haven’t been shown how to hear yourself. Some people aren’t born with that natural ability but it can be developed. Start off by first just listening to the exercises and try focusing in the middle of your forehead to hear the sound. Then start practicing trying to match the pitches on the exercises by simply singing aww to it. Each time you will start to hear yourself a bit better but it takes time. It could also be that you’re a bit restricted physically which is why you can’t control the pitch. That will get better as but just listen to the exercises first before starting to sing. Do it over and over and let me know.
Best,
Roger
Thanx for the video can’t wait till the next one.
I will be putting this technique to use and see how effective it is.
Once again thank you so much for making and this video.
: )
You’re quite welcome Laura.
Roger
Thanks for the lesson. I had never been told of these muscles in singing before. It does make a big difference. Thanks
Hi R:
It was the same for me after years of taking lessons. It keeps making a difference over time.
Roger
What a great video!! I’ll eagerly be awaiting your next one.
Thanks for you comment Maya. You’ll love the next one.
Roger
Geoff,
I thank you so much for sharing this important video!
Roger is awesome!
To you both: keep up the good work and please keep the videos coming!
Again, thanks!!!
Thanks so much Margie and we intend to do that!
Roger
Hello Roger, thank you so very much for even giving out your free advice videos. I am the quadriplegic and I cannot use my hands. I really enjoy singing, but after my accident I don’t have all the use of my diaphragm I had considered (a high base) and I definitely do not know how to control my voice. I go to clubs and sing karaoke whenever I get the chance. I very much would love to sing much better. If you are not able to help me. I would still like to thank you for opening your site.
Eric Cerra.
Hi Eric:
Don’t worry too much about having to use your diaphragm for as you continue with the exercises you’ll see that it takes very little air to produce a decent sound. Relax with it and allow things to open up for you.
Roger
referred by shamir songwriter tips online….i need serious help. I’m sure this will help. Time is precious. looking forward to your next hint, tip, or a reason to fly there for a lesson if necessary…

JAPAN
Hi Natasha:
I’ve worked with many artists from Japan including Yuki of Bennie K. She started with me when she was 15. Do let me know if you plan a tip here.

Roger
I’m a beginnner when it comes to singing, but I’ve really been wanting to work on my voice. I thought this video to be informative and I look forward to seeing more!
Thank you!
Elisabeth:
Being a beginner is a great place to start as you haven’t been using a lot of bad habits so keep going.
Best,
Roger
Hello, this was too cool and great to do. If you’d like….check out my website with my “Play-list”. I wrote the lyrics. Didn’t sing them….wish I could have. I’m just a little on the Edith Bunker side! lol
Thanx for the tips,great stuff.
Happy Holidaze!
Great lyrics Andrea! I work with a lot of songwriters who eventually start feeling comfortable enough to sing their own demos. Just keep your mind open.
Best,
Roger
Thanks alot Rodger, Great info. Can’t wait for the one to follow.
I’m so happy it helped Laman.
Roger
i’m so glad! so happy! thank you so much! i will practice everyday while my music is on! eep!
Great Grace. It keeps getting better.
Roger
I love the way you explained and demonstrated this technique.
Thanks Gina. I keep trying to make the information simple to understand and use.
Best,
Roger
Very good advise, and a great technic. I have been working on my vocals and know from trying it just once that this will be a great tool to have in my tool box. Looking forward to what you have cooking for next time. By the way”where have you been all my career”…..
Deral
Thanks Deral! You found me just at the right time.
Best to you,
Roger
It worths more than a million. Thanks Roger.
Thanks Francis and I hope you receive even more.
Roger
I tried this technique and did it to one of my songs I was working on. I swear that my voice can hit those higher notes better then they did before. I sound quite bad with the high notes but I am positive that there’s already been an improvement!!!
THANKS SO MUCH!
You’re welcome Kat. Try approaching your high notes easily. Your body will start to relax and trust it more then your sound will improve. Then you can add the power.
Roger
Never thought of the swallowing muscles inhibiting the singing voice. Thanks for the advice and demonstration.
Thanks Rob..that was my major problem as well.
Roger
wow ! Thanx I am using this to one of my songs now ……I can tell the difference !
Great Ahaleyah:
Keep doing it and it only improves.
Roger
Great technique. Thank you for your tips.
And thanks for your comment MJ
Roger
Hello Roger, Thanks for sharing and making this info available for vocalist. I will certainly forward it to singers I know. I am a vocalist and have taught but want to spend my time really focusing on performing and composing..I was a Raelette with Ray Charles and released a new CD Dream For One Bright World. If you can find the time give it a listen and critique as to how I can do it better. I wrote it and produced the CD..it is all original material. http://www.cynthiascott.com/Cynthia_Scott/Dream_For_One_Bright_World.html
Hi Cynthia:
Thanks so much for the great song and lyrics. You sound great and I would suggest that you also watch my second video here and start utilizing the pulling down method when you go into your upper range. Also, be sure that in that part of your range that you keep you vowel sounds in the words narrow or thin. Try doing it easily at first where you don’t feel that you are pushing at all to get there and then allow the power to build after practice.
Best to you,
Roger
Thanx for a great video. I’ve started practicing on it and i hope it will help my singing.
Thanks again.
Hi Shimmi:
It definitely will so just be patient with it. Each day gets better.
Roger
Excellent video, thanks
Thanks so much for your comment Tom.
Roger
Hey Roger,
Thanks for these videos. I’m finding this teachnique is easier to use. Thank you so much for sharring.
You’re welcome Anneka. There will be more that will help you even further.
Roger
YOU ARE THE MAN!
THANK YOU ROGER SO MUCH
YOUR VIDEOS CHANGED MY LIFE
Noni:
That is such a great thing to hear.
Thanks,
Roger
i’ve watched the vid after signing up, i am so sorry to ask a stupid questiom, but where do you exactly put the thumbs >< and again i'm terribly sorry for asking sl
Hi Jennica:
That’s not a stupid question at all. You put your thumbs under you jaw and then swallow so you can become aware of how the swallowing muscles feel when they come down. Then when you’re doing the exercise you just put your thumbs there slightly just so you can feel to make sure they aren’t coming down. You’ll start to figure out how to produce the sound without that happening. Keep practicing.
Roger
Thank you very much for this great idea. I work with a lot artists having problems reaching higher tones…
Now I know how to fix it.
Best,
Thomas

Great Thomas. You’ll keep learning more to help your artists.
Best to you,
Roger
Hey I just wanted to know if my favorite singer uses technique too. What do you say to his voice? Does this technique also work for rock singers?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=635P03aWfmA
Hi Andreas:
Yes, this technique works for rock singers as I’ve coached hundreds. From what I can hear and see in the video his technique at this point is pretty good which is why he is able to hit that higher range. He needs to be careful though that as he ages he doesn’t start to apply too much tension and pressure when he’s singing. It all comes down to a particular balance of sound placement while singing which I’m sure I’ll address in future videos.
Roger
Thank you Roger –
this actually made me cry because as I did this exercise I found myself connecting with the voice of my childhood!
I realized while doing the “nay nays” that I am much more relaxed if I let my jaw come forward just a bit…now here’s why it was such an amazing realization – I had some pretty major dental work done as a teenager…and I always wondered why, as an adult, my voice couldn’t do what I knew it was capable of as a kid. My jaw was moved back, which has completely changed all of that musculature…
Thank you for showing me how to be a “nay-sayer!!”
Wow Angela..that actually makes me cry. I’m so happy this helped and it will get even better. Thanks for sharing that.
Roger
Thankyou Roger, I should say to be charitable with music knowledge to this level is truly how it should be. Im a Kiwi and I make psyechedelic music. I have only had a day to practice your neigh neigh neigh method (or is that nae?) and my voice had colour and depth rarely gained with limited warmups.. I guess that two handed method is not good while driving?
I look forward to seeing improvements… Simon.
LOL Simon, no that would not be good idea while driving. You will find however that after your body and voice are truly familiar with the exercise and what it is designed to accomplish, you’ll be able to do it without your hands.
Best to you,
Roger
Hi Roger, well, you have got your hands full answering all our e-mails…Blessings upon you for giving us your time, it will be returned to you. I say thank you for many of us. Now, I have a bit of a problem… I just don’t get it Roger, I have tried as you showed us & after doing the ney neys & using the ney neys to music, I don’t get where my voice is SUSPOSED to be going. I want to sing a Gutteral Sound, and Gutteral IS NOT coming out with ney ney neys. I am so sorry for not understanding. I am a newbie to singing especially before people. I have so much more to tell ya, but I won’t take up more space…sorry friends. Your friend, Nancy
Hi Nancy:
Thanks for you question and really do enjoy answering them. The nay, nay, nay, exercise is to help you gain freedom in your singing by releasing the swallowing muscles. This needs to be accomplish first before you should really try and add different effects like a growl or guttural sound. All of those sounds can be produced in a correct way however without damaging your voice. There will be more to come.
Best,
Roger
I want my voice back- I had 100 of radiation for a tumour at and on the bottom ofmy tounge. Now it has been 2 years since and i am talking well and try to sing.I am not lying here when i say i had a beautiful voice. Iwastaught how to sing by a wonderful teacher in my youth and always remembered about projection from the diaphram. Now i couldnt hold a note in a bag. I am trying to get it. I have no saliva glands and the swelling is still there . The dr,s said the swelling will not go away. I have said to them thati will sing again. being that they suddested i shouldnt talk for a year after treatment. They now say that i am free of it all and cant understand why i can talk the way i do. So now I want to sing. Now — what do i do to get to hold a note. when i do it is wavy and sore. This is driving me nuts. I have projection but cant hold and canr even get my voice to hit the right notes when i sing. Yhis terrible – BUT i will win– Thanks–
Hi Vern:
It does take a while for the vocal cords to recover after that kind of treatment but they are very resilient. I will be posting a video on rehabilitation that will address this future. One thing that might help now is to know that there are muscles connected to the cords and they have a memory that can be lost after not being used for a while. Try to think that you will get them to start to come back together again by directing them forward and together gently when you speak. In time they will regain that memory and start to function more when you’re singing. Be patient with it.
I hope this helps.
Roger
hi thanks so much, I’ve been having that trouble so this helped me out a whole lot. You’re awesome.
Thanks much for info Roger very informative. I can always use lessons. I’ve always sung the wrong way straining my vocal till out of voice
Hi Barry:
I used to do the same thing so rest assured it can all be corrected.
Best,
Roger
hi Roger you are real key man to sing successfully
i love you with this good work
keep up the good work
cheers lori
Thanks so much Lori and I love doing it.
Roger
Great Video! Will you be posting any video of vocal exercises that we can do on a consistent basis and/or to do before having to sing?
Thank you so much, and yes, there will be something coming out soon.
Best,
Roger
Hey Roger,
How are you? I hope you are well. I just came across your video. Thank you for what you are teaching, I strongly believe your lessons help me immensely.
God Bless you,
Richard
You’re quite welcome Richard and thank you for your comments.
Roger
ROGER, THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR THESE REVELATIONS! I SING IN SPANISH, I’M FROM ARGENTINA, DOWN SOUTH AMERICA, AND I SING BLUES AND SOUL. I’M WAITING FOR NEW TIPS! ANYTHING ON MELISMA? THANKS AGAIN FOR SHARING!
YOUR AMIGO/FRIEND, CHIMI ROMERO.
Hi Chimi:
You’ll start to understand as you work the technique that it is only the changes in the vocal cords that change the notes and your melisma will improve as well. More to come.
Best,
Roger
Hey Roger.
This exercise really helped I can now reach higher notes that I couldn’t before! I was just wondering if you could tell me how to reach my head voice? That would be great.
Thanks!
Rochelle!
Hi Rochelle:
As you practice these more you will start to relax and allow the sound to move easily into your head voice. I will address that in future videos as well.
Roger
hey Roger, thanks for the lesson, i will definitely implement it, i belong to a worship team, a back up vocalist and sometimes i just cant get my key and hold a pitch and my breathing is totally bad, and i have lots of phlem, i feel really bad sometimes and need to get the focus off myself and just give my best but its really hard to not be concious…sometimes i feel like i cant sing, other times i do really well…
Bianca:
Everything you mentioned is related to your larynx moving around too much when you sing. Those things will all start to correct themselves in time as you practice these. Please don’t be too self conscious and stay with it.
Best,
Roger
Thank you! It is really interesting.
So glad you’re enjoying them Adina.
Roger
Wow, thank you!! You videos helped me alot (: I hope that you would do a video of Vibrato too!! ^__^ Can’t wait for Video number 3
Thanks so much Francine. I will definitely be addressing vibrato but I tend to not get my clients to try and control it too much in the beginning until I know there is freedom first in their tone production. It will all make sense to you soon.
Best,
Roger
These are 2 of the best exercises I have ever known
Thanks Willy. They really changed my voice and singing as well.
Roger
im going to start this but even as i replyd ur video an did it along with u i notice i do that alot thanks for showing me something that works rite away..lol i thought the “mom” exercise was a lil silly but i herd a difference ..u rock i would love to learn more!!! singing is what i love but i dont think i can make ma voice better untill now ..i have hope! thanks!
That makes me very happy Tee. There is always hope and you will continue to get better.
Roger
Dear Roger,
You are the truth sir!! I don’t have a computer but I watch your few videos on YouTube from my iPhone.
I am an aspiring r&b/pop artist. I have a calamity of questions for you Mr. Burnley…lol but I’ll only ask you a few for now. 1st off, Im not sure if I have found my true tone, my singing voice has a natural raspiness 2 it. And it makes my songs sound pretty good. But after awhile of singing it seems as if though I have developed more of a horsrness and I began straining. What technique can I use that will help me build a more rich n true tone. My second question is what can I do to remove excess phlem from my throat? Mr burnley you are a godsend, I am very serious about a professional, and successful carreer as a singer. I would really appreciate any of your advice. Hope to hear from you Soon.
Hi Avery:
What is happening is that there is a bit too much strain on the cords while you are singing and that is also causing the phlegm. Keep watching the videos and using the techniques and that will improve. The rasp in your voice will correct a bit also even if part of it is natural.
Roger
I ENJOYED THE LESSON AND HAVE TRIED IT…THANK YOU…WORKING ON MY DREAMS…
Thanks so much for your comment Antoinette.
Best to you,
Roger
Wow!! I can’t believe how much that changed my voice!! So now that I know how to sing better…have any tips on working your way into the music business??
Thanks for publishing this video, it helped a lot!!
You’re welcome Bailey. Hopefully there will be other information on the business itself that I might useful to post. Will let you know.
Best,
Roger
Thank you so much for the information. It’s enjoyable to learn the techniques of singer so I can understand the exercises that come with singing. Thanks’ for taking time out of your busy schedule and publishing this video for us.
Thank you so much and I’m so glad you appreciate them.
Roger
Roger,
You are making a lot of sense. I’ve been a voice teacher for a while now and singing since I was 4. I am 38 now and it’s my first time to come across this Nay nay nay thing. Gosh! It really works. Thanks. Now I am a big fan of yours. I am teaching my students the same thing I am learning from you. God bless you, man!
MEL, Philippines
Mel:
That is so great! Hopefully I’ll give you more to use with your students.
Best to you and them,
Roger
I wanna try it, but I’m worried about feeling kind of stupid. And I need the work considering I’m in my friend’s band and I could probably use the range. Although I’m trying to find a way quickly over it considering I might have to do a sing-off with our drummer. So, I have motivation to get over my self-bashfulness! Lol, ever heard a 15 year old girl these days use the word bashfulness?
Vi:
All singers have that to some degree. Try and find a place to practice by yourself for a while and you confidence will start to grow when you feel that you have a bit more control over your voice.
Roger
Hey Roger,
thanks! I love your enthusiasm. I can’t seem to “get it” with regard to how to do this vocal excercise or what the end result is supposed to feel like.
Perhaps we can do a 10 minute lesson on the phone which I’d gladly pay for.
thanks
b
Hi Bret:
I will be doing private lessons on Skype as well. Just let me know.
Roger
Hi Roger,
You exercises are really great, but I am having a problem halfway when I am warming up with my voice. My throat starts to hurt when I am warming up, as I use different exercises when I warm up. I humm to my favourite song, lip roll and do the tongue trill. Please help!
Thanks
Taffy:
It sounds as if you been singing for a while with restriction so it will take time for that to lessen. Try doing the nay, nay, nay exercise more. If you start to hurt, then stop and rest. We need to get those muscles relaxed and then that problem will go away.
Roger
Dear Roger Burnley,
This technique helps me feel muscles of my throat I didnt know existed, I’m not a singer but a musician wanting to accompany myself better, after a few bars I’m out of breath forcing my voice, making me tensed so it makes it less than enjoyable to do both at the same time. I’m going to practice this exercise until I can do it as second nature. Thanx a lot for this precious gift.
Hi Khobe:
Yes, that will really help. Just remember that you are re-training your body in terms of how you produce sound so just be patient with it and each time it will get better.
Roger
Hello Roger,
l was searching a singing class and,l found your webside, l speak english as a second lanugage so , l would like to improve my pronounciation, one of my teacher told me that if l take a singing class, it would help to improve my pronounciation.l just would like know what is your opinion about this? That would really work for me?
Thank you,
Hi Johnsel:
Yes, it will help you because you’ll be focused on the vowel sounds in words while you are singing and that will also help your pronunciation. I’ll be posting a video on that soon. Stay tuned.
Roger
Hello Roger,
I was searching for singing tips over the net, and I came across your website. I’m an actress, and I am auditioning for a musical theater production next year. Being proactive, I decided to try and learn how to sing properly before my audition. I will have a lot of competition, and seeing as I’m not perfect in my vocals I figured I should practice. The tips you have given me through your video’s are a great help already. It’s amazing how such exercises make such a difference. So my question to you is, any tips on how to drastically improve my vocals for next year’s audition?
With thanks.
Hi Alice:
My bit of advice would be to really focus on the songs that you will be using for the audition. Use the techniques I’m giving you with those specific songs. As you’re developing your voice, each song will offer it’s own challenges so since you won’t have that much time just stay focused on those songs. Later your overall ability will develop for any song.
Roger
Hey Roger. This is really interesting…Just one question, when you are letting your swallowing muscles relax, should you not feel them at all for this to be working properly. Or is there some leverage allowed?
Hi Cody:
You may still feel them a bit in the beginning but the ultimate goal is to not feel them in that hardened state as when you’re actually swallowing. You’ll feel them relax more and more.
Roger
Hey, Brendarosietta here!
Okay so I love sing and music is my life. I’ve been singing since I was three and I ereally want to sing better. Over the years I been recording my self singing, and I feel like my voice is getting worse. I watched your video and I don’t know if I’m just not doing it right or what but I don’t think it’s working, I know that things take time so I’ll keep trying. I really hope it works.
Brendarosietta:
It will definitely work however it will take a little time for you. When we have doing things wrong over time, the body has formed a memory of that and now we have to train it with a new memory. It will get better so just be patient.
Best to you,
Roger
Aha, thank you so much. I have been a musician most of my life, and have been fighting to get my vocals just right. While I think that I can carry a tune, I find myself straining to reach the higher notes. Your video has helped me realize why I strain so much. Thanks a million Roger, I am looking forward to your next video.
Thanks so much Thom and I’m really glad that helped.
Roger
hey thankxx for the video but i dint understand one thing. how hard are we supposed to press?? or are we just supposed to put our thumbs without pressing??? hope u’ll reply back. thankxx
Hi Rach:
You only place the thumbs under your jaw so that you can feel whether or not the muscles are tightening and coming down. You don’t need to press hard. They will start to relax more with practice.
Roger
Yeah, I have the same question as rach (see above). Could you please help describe better how hard to press? Cool tip though, thank a lot!
Hi Roger!
Thank you so much for the advice! I have been wanting to improve my tone for a very long time and to try to be able to hit those high notes every single time I attempt them. Because now I am only able to hit them sometimes.
I have just tried out this exercise and I feel that I really can’t control that muscle of mine! I am getting quite anxious now actually. I don’t know if I’m putting my thumbs at the right place because I can’t feel it when I swallow but only when I yawn. And I can always feel it coming down when I move up a note or so. What should I do??
Thank you!!
Charissa:
The yawn does really help you to feel where they are. Just be patient and keep doing the exercises and they will gradually start to release.
Roger
Thanku so much Roger… I have always wanted to learn singing from an professional and I’m so glad I found ur website. Thanku so very much, I can’t think of a way to thank u enough

This lesson really helped me alot

Hi Rodger,
I am embarassed a bit as I tried do this exercise to “blue kentucky” girl and when I hit the high notes, the muscle under my thumbs hardened up.
Is that suppose to happen?
Hey Roger, Im still a begginer and I’m looking for all the help I can get. This without a doubt is going to help.
Hey Mr. I need your help. My best friend is an awesome singer, and her voice is beautiful not only that but we suppose to have a band together not only that but she got a lot of record deals but she didn’t take them because of me and i feel like i owe her because mess it up just by how suckish my voice is. Plus i take to long to start singing i front of people its because im scared of what they might think of my voice and will ended up lying to me about but anyway.I want my singing voice to be better and start fight on time. Thank you so much!
Hi Roger, Initially thanks for sharing your knowledge with all of us endeavoring to enhance our voices. I am truly grateful for that. I myself have toured with many great rock bands and I always feel like my voice gets tired quickly before my set list is done. I am diligently tackling these exercises you afforded me so hopefully my up and coming concerts will fully benefit from them. Thanks again for sharing. God Bless……Manny
Hi Roger, thanks for your videos, I’ will start using your tips and hope to improve “my” singing.
I’m a guitar player who tries to sing (at times), but often after 5 or 10 minutes “singing” I will end up coughing. (nothing serious according my GP),
So it must be bad technique.
Thanks again, Herman
Hi Roger, thank you so much for these lessons,
I am only 13, and thanks to you I can hold a note almost as long as Whitney Houston – in her song ” I will always love you ”
but could you list the excercises that can REALLY help me hit high notes?
The first things I noticed are
the comments from you guys
thanks this is great

Hello Roger
You just don’t know how much I appreciate the music blogs you have sent. I have always said that I wish some people who learn how to do things better would share it with people without charging all the time. I believe that when you give it will certainly be given back to you in ways you can not imagine.
Thank you so much for the blog high notes made easy.
You are a blessing
Hi Roger, thanks for your tips….I have a question about this excersise: when I’m singing a scale or a song with this “nay nay” pronunciation, should I use my nose to produce the “nay” sounds or should I avoid nasal sounds?
Thanks again
Two words for you.. KICK ASS !! lol.. it worked instantly .. i really noticed a difference in my tone !! looking forward to see more from you.. one thing i really wanna know about is controlling sustain without getting tired and vibrato.. would u teach us that plz ?! thnx anyway
I got an email from shamir and he shared this site with me.
As I watch you go thru the lesson, I did the exercise
with you. It was funny, as the sounds came forth, out of our
mouth. It is wonderful, Rodger to be in your class for instruction
and knowledge and and purpose. Exercising our talent.
so our singing can become better.
Thank you for sharing and caring for each of us. Giving back is great.
we are winners and we thank you
I am having difficulties trying to enter into your contest. I can’t seem to send it, so I appologize if this gets resent!! I love to sing. I have sung for many years. I sing at church masses, weddings, funerals…I have taught elementary school for some years. I am still looking for more ways to improve. I have five children who all love to listen and to participate in music but voice lessons for that many would be impossible for me. I love to share my voice with others and I would like my children to do the same some day.

Hi Roger, Thank you so much for the new exercise! I love to sing but I want to be able to sing with others listening. This exercise helps a ton, I always feel a tightening strain when I sing but these techniques are really helping me let go of that! God Bless.

Hi Roger!! i love to sing but the problems i’d is , am when am singing its sound like cameout thru my nose, which sounds weird cos, am having a sinus, how to get rid of it? and how to get a really high pitching notes like those rock singer’s e.g Clause Mein frm the band Scorpions? can everybody’s hit or reach that kinds of notes?
i really appreciate if u can help me to solve this problem?
i’ll try your method 1st and see how’s the outcome. Thank you in advance Roger. All The best to You
Sincerely
Izad
hi Roger.
You know what, I encountered an article about 2 years ago about the Alexander technique in singing and it talks about the same thing: A singer should not put aditional stress on the vocal chords. Since then i’ve been looking for articles or posts that talk about it and I am quite happy that i found one. I think it really is an error that most singers and vocal coaches do not pay attention to. Thanks again. i’ll be following your posts.
When I sing is it normal for my throat to vibrate and can you sing so much that it gives a sore throat?
Hi Breeana:
You should not necessarily feel a vibration and the fact that your throat is getting sore means that there is too much restriction and tension when you’re producing sound. Take it slow with the exercises and allow them to be easy. It will get better in time.
Roger
Fascinating,,, You tip sounds so simple and as a songwriter who sings his own songs before giving it to other people to sing I will hopefully be able to communicate what i want,,,,,
Im currently writing a comedy musical for film looking for wonderful voices so any knowledge is welcomed \
thankyou Erik and of course merry christmas from sydney Oz
Thanks Roger and good luck with the musical.
Roger
Hi Roger.
i have such a terrible voice that i just cant sing could you help me?
Sarah:
The simple answer is yes. It would just require your patience and diligence to practicing.
Roger
wow roger this working thank you.
Its wonderful to see how in a simple lesson of just 4mins you can transform a person into a mature singer. I thank you so much for these videos for they’ve solved what looked like a mystery over the years.
Thanx Roger, but I’ll go slow on competitions. Its a bit early. But when I have learnt a lot from you, I promise I’ll be one of the contestants. In future. Hopefully, it wont be long.
Pse, keep sending me more.
omg this video really helped me!! it works like miracle!! thank you so much!!
Hey Roger great video I will be trying this tip and see how it goes. I am sure you will get positive feedback.
Thanks so much Dave. Let me know.
Roger
Hey Roger, Ive been trying to do this for a couple of minutes now, but I seem to be getting something wrong, no matter what I do and try I still end up feeling my swallowing muscles. Is this supposed to be normal and will be fixed with practice? I do all the funny faces and stuff but I dont feel like it helps, so if there are any extra tips you could share with me to help me with my singing, Id really love to hear ‘em!
Thanks Roger!
Hi Carlos:
You might feel a bit of movement but we don’t want them to really come down or become hard. Start by doing the exercise easily, using little air and sort of squint your eyes a bit and try to direct the sound above your cheeks. Only go as high in your range where you still feel them relaxed. You will gain more notes in time.
Roger
Hi Roger, Thanks for your help, I look forward to practising your techniques and hearing my voice improve, Thanksw heaps!
Hey Ben:
You’re quite welcome. Let us know your results.
Roger
Hey Roger,
I’ve always been having a problem with singing…especially with my diaphragm, I’ve watched this video…but I can’t seem to understand it.. Pardon me for I am sixteen. Can you give me some advice on how to use the diaphragm for singing?
Thanks
Hi Roger,
I joined my church choir temporarily for their annual Messiah concert and was having a lot of trouble with my throat tightening up – by the end of an hour rehearsal my neck muscles were aching. I found your videos just five days before the concert and was able to sing through the last two rehearsals and performance without throat-ache! You are a peach!
Thanks Roger
maybe theirs some hope for me yet,I hope it helps.
JP.
You’ll be surprised by how much hope there is. Stay with it.
Roger
Roger,
I like your style! I have been looking for someone like you for a while. I will try this exercise again and again because initially my tongue muscles felt pretty tight. I think I need more help from you either a video series or a lesson. I ‘d like to know your fees.
Hi Andrea:
Thanks so much. I’ll also post this here for anyone who would like private lessons you can visit my website at:
http://rogerburnley.com/ The contact information is there as well. You may also email my assistant at: kasey.thurman@gmail.com
Best to you,
Roger
Can you tell me what it means to “sing with your diaphragm”
Also,I’m trying to breathe with my diaphragm but my chest and shoulders
are still moving,am I doing it wrong?
Hi Adrine:
It would be helpful for you to think of it as singing while keeping air in your diaphragm. Try to think that you want the air to expand in your diaphragm and not simply pull the air into your chest. This should help in keeping your chest and shoulders from rising so much.
Roger
Thnx so much, i have been hitting the high notes that i didnt even think was possible for me. thnkyou so much!
That’s so great to hear Chloe. Thank you for letting me know.
Best,
Roger
Hi roger, thank you so much for this tip ive been practicing it and its really showed me more on how to sing properly. I really do believe you were born to teach people how to sing because you explain things so simply. My one question for you is would you use your method if you were lets say a rock singer? would it still apply? Thank you so much, hope to hear from you.
Hi Russell:
Yes, you would use it to sing rock. The basic technique and production of sound is the same but the application and placement becomes different for different styles of singing.
Roger
its good what ypu made for us i sing but i have some problem with my voice but i’m trying your secret
Hey Thomas:
Be patient with it. A little bit of advancement each day will go a long way in time.
Best,
Roger
Hi Roger, Thank you so much for this tip live been practicing it and its really showed me moer on how to sing properly. I really do believe you were born to teach people how to sing because you explain things so simply.I really appreciate your tips. Thanks you so much, hope to hear from you.May God bless you.
Thank you so much Momaquoe. I think I’m a good teacher because I used to do everything wrong and I was determined to change that. Now it’s a joy to help others and save them a lot of time.
Best to you,
Roger
hhey i saw that first video. I’m not sure i understand: what exactly am i doing w/ the faces, and every time i sing it must be “nay”?
Eld:
I use the faces only to get you to feel a new way the sound should be traveling through your body. Doing the faces helps to prevent it from falling back in your throat. After time you don’t need them at all. You don’t always have to use nay, you can use any sound but the point is to create the sound without the swallowing muscles coming down.
Roger
also, is this teaching me to turn my chest voice to head voice, or just to get the “swallowing muscles” out of the way so i can sing higher by using my normal voice?
Hi Eld:
You’re actually going to accomplish both things. You are learning to release the swallowing muscles so that you are more easily able to mix your chest and head voice together which is the ultimate goal. The result of all that is that you will sing higher and it will sound more like you’re carrying your “normal” voice higher but it will be a mixed voice.
Roger
Hey Roger,
Thanks for the video but I think I am having trouble, I feel alot of tension in my throat when I sing.
Like I can stage act and do a stage voice easily and feel no pressure at all when I am doing that, what is the difference between the two? (if there is any) I think I need a different way to relax my throat maybe? Or I am forcing the air out too much.
I’m 15 so I get confused
Hi Jamie:
At 15 your voice has gone through some changes and I suspect you are trying to force the air out. Try relaxing a bit and only take your voice as high as you can without feeling that you’re pushing. Keep doing the exercises and in time it should start to relax. Let us know your results.
Roger
I’m just curious on whether this works for all types of vocals? Say a Kurt Cobain type grunge vocal, could you achieve that through this training? Not to sing exactly like Kurt Cobain cause that would be ridiculous but what I’m saying is does it work with a coarser less pure tone?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MwX0b7n0cUg I’m looking to sing simmilar to what I already do but y’know, reach new levels and such will this vocal course help me with that? or is it set to singing like an RNB / Soft Rock or musical type tone?
Hi Eddie:
Yes, it works for all styles. Singers who sing with that grunge sound and have maintained their voices over years have found that place. I have a singer who is in a Pearl Jam tribute band and has to sing that hard edge several times a week and always maintains his voice.
Roger
thank you very much for the tips it will help me a lot to improve my singing prowess. Hope to have more tips soon. Thank you very much once again.
my friends told me that i have a good voice but i’ve got problem on hitting high notes can you give me some tips on how to achieve it? and also how to use my diaphragm in singing. Hope you could email me some exercises to improve my singing ability. thank you!
Hi Eddie
I would really like to thank you for the help.
I haven’t tried the techniques yet but i would like to know one thing
how long would it take for me to be singing good? Once i found you, i was really thrilled and excitied that i finally found someone that could help me out.
Hello Roger.
I have heard this tip before but because it was never explained to me how to use it, and that you’re actually suppose to ‘adjust’ it, i gave up on it.
Thanks for the tips and great video
hey roger, that’s a great tip, i’ve been singing for almost 14 years and this tip has helped heaps. thanks so much. i look forward to hearing the rest of your tips.
Hey thanks so much for the tips Ive been singing all my life, proffesionally since 1992 and just from using your excercise tips Ive been able increase my vocal stamina
without strain -I have more knowledge on what im doing thank you bro
Hi
just checking out your site very interesting.
I am glad to see that you have made this video. great.
LOL!!! I’ll have to try that thumb under the swallowing muscles trick, it seems like it makes sense. I’ll work on that and get back to you…
Hey Roger, I have a real problem with my NASALLY voice when I sing. How could I fix this?
YOU GAVE A GRAIT TIP IT RELLY HELPED WITH ME WITH MY SINGING VOICE
Wow thanks Roger! I had no idea these simple techniques would have such a tremendous effect on my voice. Much appreciated.
I’m excited to try it. When I sing high notes (I can barely get to the F# above middle C) my voice shuts off.
I wonder if someone wanted to be a tenor, could they use techniques to get there? From F# above middle C to “Tenor C”?
hello thank you so much for this your a real help im 13 and im really hoping to get a good singing career i just need to improve my voice can you help me i also need more confidence and thats all please thanks again i noticed a difference immediatly
thank u so much is really helpd me alot. Im a beginner and im hoping to become a singer. I just need to know what is the difference between singing voice and speaking voice, i have no idea which one is the right one to use. That video above had helped me alot but where can i find the piano thing you played to do the exercise??. THANK YOU SO MUCH xD
Hi, I quess I am not clear on what I should be feeling under the chin ,I’ll keep trying and see if it comes to me. Thank you this should be great fun.
Me again, thanks for replying
“At 15 your voice has gone through some changes and I suspect you are trying to force the air out. Try relaxing a bit and only take your voice as high as you can without feeling that you’re pushing. Keep doing the exercises and in time it should start to relax. Let us know your results.”
I tried to relax and sing which worked, at about a low talking volume (I am against waking people up) so it worked around a whisper, next stop an actual volume that could be heard, maybe somewhere public, it’s weird but sometimes I sing with no tension and others I feel it (Should I try to remember the “no tension times” to try to be more consistant)! So I will try to relax more and get it done with the exercises. Sorry for a long comment
I’m going to get more help from my school’s vocal teacher as well :3
Hi Jamie:
That is really good and exactly what you should be doing. You will find that after you keep practicing and your body adjusts, you’ll be able to add more power and volume. Keep at it!
Roger
Hello Roger,
i have try your exercise from Video and i am wonder how much high i can sing. I have to te first time in my life heard me singing so, so high! It was song “You mik me feel brand new” fro Stillistics. I am wonder that i can sing this easliy with my deep voice wit your technic!!!! I thank you very much!!!
And i also wish to you VERY HAPPY NEW JEAHR!!!!!!!!!!
Roses
Hey Roger! I’M ALIVE!!! I have to say that I’ve done a fair bit of research on singing but never came across this technique. After reading over various comments I can see that the results are suppose to be AMAZING!!!
I find it really cool how you’re helping people out of the kindness of your heart. I’m means a lot to me and I’m sure it means a lot to many others out there. (there aren’t many other people that give away advice and techniques for free – I think I speak on the behalf of everyone who has seen your videos when I say we are EXTREMELY thankful). Not all of us are fortunate to be able to afford this help though we all have dreams and goals. It makes me happy that you recognize that.
Unfortunatley, I haven’t had much time to see the rest of your videos. I’ve only seen this one video. As I’ve said before, this excercise seems really cool but I’m having difficult relaxing the muscle under my chin. I’ve been making the faces, putting my thumb on the muscle, and hitting the high “nay” sound, all while concentrating on relaxing the muscle. But it just won’t stop flexing! lol. Would you be able to offer me some suggestions on what I should do?
There’s these 2 other concenrs of mine that have been bugging me for awhile but I haven;t been able to determine accurately.
This prevents me from practicing. Is there any technique that I can use to prevent this? I beleive this is caused from not using my diagphram to project my voice. Is this likely and if it is how do I sing from the diagphram? How do I know if I’m already singing from my diagphram?
One is that I’ve just started singing for amount a couple of months. I’m fifteen. I’m scared that becuase I didn’t practice as a child that I won’t be able to reach what my true potential would have been if I had started as a child. Is this true?
Another concern of mine is that everytime I sing (especially high), a little while afterwards, I’ll get a sore throat.
Thanks so much for reading my comment. I hope you have the time to reply. It would mean the world to me. I apologize for the long comment but I’m so desperate for the help. lol. I understand if you don’t get around to it staight away. Thanks again
Hi Jaedon:
I answered some of your questions in a later post but I also wanted to say that you are starting at a perfect age. People who begin later usually take a bit more time because they may have been using particular bad habits, so to speak, for a while. No matter what age a person starts, they can always improve.
Roger
read over my post. Sorry for the gramatical errors. I read over it about 5 times to make sure it didn;t have any. I’m a fail edit. lol.
Grammatical edits if you didn’t understand something.
Paragraph 2 (line 1-2)
“I’m means a lot to me and I’m sure it means a lot to many others out there” = “It means a lot to me and I’m sure it means a lot to many others out there”
Paragraph 4 (line 1-2)
“…I haven;t been able to deterimne accurately” = “…I haven’t been able to deterimne the solution to this problem accurately.
Paragraph 4 (line 3)
“One is that I’ve just started singing for amount a couple of months” = “One is that I’ve just started singing for abount a couple of months (since the beginning for summer)”
hey, I left a comment just the other day but I guess a problem occured with the internet. lol. It was extremely long so I’ll just sum up my questions.
I want to start by saying thanks for posting this excercise online – the results seem to be working for everyone else! i hope they work for me
The only problem I’m experiencing is that I can still feel the muscle under my neck flexing even when trying to relax it (and making the faces). I don’t know what I’m doign wrong.
Another one of my questions was “how can I prevent myself from getting a sore throat after i sing. I think it’s becuase I don’t sing from my diagphram but how do I know if I’m already singing from my diagphram? If I’m not, what excercise can I use to begin singing from there?
Thanks so much for your help
Hi Jaedon:
You’ve been using the swallowing muscles under your jaw for some time which is why your voice gets sore or hoarse after singing. It will take time for them to start to relax so just stay with it. Be sure and watch and practice with all the videos posted here and it will start to make more sense.
Roger
Hello Roger,

xxx
Thank you so much Roger. You have changed my life so much. I’m trying to become an actor/singer and with your help, it should only help me out in the future. Your exercises make a lot of sense and make my voice sound much firmer and much clearer than ever before. I’d like to thank you with all of my heart.
Hi Jonathan:
That is so great to hear and thank you so much for letting me know. You’ll find that you will continually make progress. Always know that the voice is an ever developing instrument so just stay with it.
Best of luck,
Roger
I forgot to mention something on my last comment. I’m 18 years old right now and I’m trying to become…in your words, the next Macy Gray, male version. I’m trying to do something with my life musically, so I really appreciate you taking time out of your day to help people like me with these issues. Also, when I was doing this exercise, I’m not exactly sure if I have my thumbs on the right side of my jaw, so can you explain to me more where your thumbs need to be in order to make it work a little bit better?
Hi Roger
I live in South Africa and this lesson alone cleared up so much for me.It just made sense the minute I heard you say and the minute I started do the exercise.I love it and I love making the funny faces.Much love to you.
Thanks so much Roberta. I really try to make my information easy to understand so I appreciate your confirmation.
Roger
I applied this to a song and got the “feel” for it and tried singing it that way. I heard results right away. Thank you very much, this really boosted my confidence as i was always disappointed with my voice. Thank you. I/m looking forward to more of your videos.
That’s so great to hear. You’ll also find that it keeps getting better as you in in the process of changing old habits.
Roger
i thought these exercises helped alot ! thanks Roger. Though i need more help on how to sustain those high notes for a long period of time because im not sure. These exercises made my voice have better quality than it did before

hi roger
Ive tried this technique but it simply doesnt work for me
I steel feel the muscles coming down and i cant fix it
When you put your thumbs on your throat are you putting them on that hole-like thing on your throat.
hi
i have 14 years and i feel that my voice is changing
everyone says that i cant reach high notes because that
please help me
thank you for your help
Hi Roger,
thanks for posting this video – you have made it with love for teaching which I can appreciate (I teach college students – not music). Funny thing is – this is an exercise I have been doing for years maybe, and nobody, ever, took the trouble to explain the anatomy behind it, so I have being doing it the wrong way all the same. It makes such an enormous difference now, first time around.
Please, keep posting and let me know when you are releasing more slots of your program.
Thanks again!
Hey hi, Jamie once again :p
but despite that I can sing
Ok (omg there is spell check :O) I think i can sing better now that my throat doesn’t hurt much ^.^
Cuz last night I just heard this song, and I’m like “hells yeah i luvs it”
And I could sing it again and again and my throat wouldn’t get sore ^.^
I think I am getting a cold though cuz my throat is getting.. well “cold” like
Whoa! Thank you so much for sharing this with me, who knew.
Hi there Roger. Well, eversince I first tried your vocal exercises my voice changed. Better than before. Thanks for giving me the opportunity of knowing those secrets about singing. I’m looking forwrd to watching more of your videos. Thanks alot.
ROGER! Wsup man!..I’ve been singing for a long time..NEVER have I seen or heard of this exercise. Im kind of upset Im just now finding out about it. Lol. Naw..but really, Im already hearing a difference! Thank you SO much for your gift. I can only imagine whats gonna happen to my voice as I learn more.
Thanks Again..STAY KOOL!
Hi Roger! thanks for this video. I have recently signed up for these internet lessons and I think I can make something of it. Though when I apply these exercises, the first for example I get a sore throat. Should I stop singing for a few days until it is not soar?
Many thanks/ Carl
Well this is very informative and it is working for me.Thank You so much.
Hi Roger! I tried working on what you showed in this video, and it really did help me. I was able to hit notes, especially high notes more easily. Thanks so much for posting this video! I would really love it if you could show more free videos. Thanks again!
Thanks so much. I’ve just became part of a college choir and i’m trying to get the most out of my voice. This si my first time in this type of singing setting so anything you have for me is greatly appreciated. Blessings.
Roger, immedi.immediately i felt a difference in my voice after doin this. Just doing this every day i think will make your voice produce better tone and quality thank you very much!
Whoaaaaa….!It’s really helpful!I look forward to your next video!Thank you so much!
Your very welcome Crocy! I’m glad to be of help.
Roger
Hi Roger
I have problem seeing ur video, maybe its my internet connection, however I just wonder if it will be possible that you send me writtern materials instead through my email. Then I’ll continue to post my progress on this site. I really need your singing lessons.
Hi Begjovi:
I’m sorry that you are not able to see them. Are you able to watch videos on Youtube? Let us know what country you’re in and maybe the technicians might be able to give you some help. I’m not able to email lessons however.
Roger
Hey Rodger:
I sing sitting down at the drums and the swallowing muscle exersise is amazing. It really makes me aware of my throat and breathing. Thank you for your generous gift!
Keith
Keith,
You’re welcome. Thank you, for taking the time to comment.
Best,
Roger
thanks 4 the tips…i’ve been singing since I was small, & what i’m really wanting to work on is making my voice more powerful…I feel like everything is good, minus projection!!! (thank God for microphones, right?)
but I appreciate any tips! Thanks again
Wow~! I can reach hit high note with this “nay”s, but the problem is, I don’t know how to apply this into my singing… By the way, the video is really great and helpful~
Hi, this video is really good, and this secret, but I quite didnt understand where exactly should I put my thumb to feel it and what way should this muscle move???
I have been singing all my life and I am 23 by now, but have felt that I dont have right technique ever, even I have had vocal training!!
Hey you Are Not A Roger You Are A God For Me Your Are One Who Have A Made Me Feel Every Thing Going Simple Thanx Very Much God Very Very Much From My Heart . You Are The One I Am Searching For Thank’s
Amir,
I’m honored by your comment. I’m glad that I could be of help.
Roger
Ive done exercises like this, and still can’t figure out how they work, or if I’m doing it right.
I can sing Christina aguileras mercy on me, but the very high note (the E) is strained and sometimes scratchy. So I need to know how to improve my range even more, because I do not feel satisfied with my voice.
Hi, I just wanted to let you know that I’ve been doing this for like a week now and I can really tell the different. Its like everything I sing sounds better and easier to do then before. I wonder how good I can get if I continue to practice this. Excited to find out!
Congratulations! As you continue to use the program, it will get better and better.
Roger
By the way THANKS!
Your welcome!
Roger
this video was truly informative…no one has ever said that to me on purpose, accidentally or otherwise…magnificent…Thanks a bundle Sir
Ahmora,
I’m glad that my posts are of value to you. Thank you for your time, and comment.
Roger
Hi Roger,
Thank you for helping out those who desire to sing like the professionals. I have been singing for a long time but I have never taken any kind of vocal training. I went on pure feelings for the notes. When I was a lot younger I could sing effortless but the older I get it becomes more of a strain. I am so thankful that I found your wonderful videos online. I have told some other people about your wonderful gift to help anyone’s voice. I love the nay nay nay but I am not sure how to put this into a slow song. I will keep trying though and let you know how it comes along. God bless you and thanks again for helping build up my confidence again.
Hi, I think I’m gonna have trouble doing that exercise because there are lots of people in my house and I don’t want them to think I’m crazy or something But I’ll still try it. By the way, do you know how to produce screams? Because I really want to learn how. Do you know Chester Bennington from Linkin Park? Well, I like to scream like him. Does screaming require a high tune of voice? because I have a pretty low voice, Thanks!
Thank you so much for your lessons! I have taken vocal lessons for years and not heard this technique. It is really great that you are doing these- it helps those of us who have done the same thing for a long time.
Ashley,
You’re so welcome! I get a lot of joy, as I read these comments. So thank you for taking the time to leave your comment.
All the best,
Roger
Hey Thank you for everything. I want to know do you use your head voice, chest voice or mix voice in this exercise??
Your the best!!! xD
Hi Amanda:
You’re quite welcome.
First, you are always trying to develop a mixed voiced. I suggest that you think you are bringing your head voice down into your chest voice. This will help prevent you from pushing too much. Over time the mixed voice will become much stronger.
Roger
Hey. Just stumbled on your website while trying to find something or someone to help me with my voice. I have a passion for dance and singing but in the country where I live, it’s hard to just find a proffessional to train you. But hey, I watched this video and wow, it’s amazing and I’m going to be following you and doing all these exercises. You are doing a great job Roger, God bless!
Dineo,
I’m glad that the videos help, and that was the main purpose. I do offer lessons over the internet, if that’s something that you’re interested in. You can visit my site, for more information: http://www.rogerburnley.com. Thank you for taking the time to comment, and I’ll look forward to the opportunity to coach you.
Roger
Wow, this is amazing!
The difference is so unbelievable!
Thanks a ton!
Haha! My clients say the same thing, every time. It’s great to be able to make such a difference.
All the best,
Roger
Hi Roger,
Thank you so much for these videos. I know nothing about singing but am trying it out. I’ve always wanted to know how to sing but am too shy to ask or perform in front of anyone. Also I can’t afford lessons right now. My singing voice isn’t great at all. This is my first time on your site. I’m trying the nay nay exercise. Is my throat supposed to hurt? I feel like my throat is vibrating and my ears hurt a bit(i don’t know how to explain it). Is my tough supposed to stay down when I am saying nay? Sorry for the stupid question, but I know nothing about singing. I love to hear people sing and it touchs me to hear a beautiful voice. Anyhow, I think I am feeling the correct muscles under my throat. They don’t seem to be moving much(good), but I feel pretty tired when I say my nays as if I’m doing something incorrectly. Maybe I’m using my voice too much. Your advice would be appreciated.
I love your videos. I look forward to more. You are truly a gift.
Hi Kimberly:
Thanks so much! No, your throat should not hurt. You should just do them very easily at first and don’t use too much voice, as you stated. If you feel any strain you should just relax and go back to it later in an easy way. Your voice will improve.
Roger
Hey Roger this is really a great video, it helps but im voice is kinda deep and i dont know how can i sing with a deep voice and im a girl. but i was wondering do you have any more helpful videos to help me learn how to sing? hope to here from you soon thats amazing. later!
Ziamond:
Thanks so much. There are many videos on this blog so be sure and watch them all. It doesn’t matter that you have a deep voice. As you develop more control and freedom in your voice, the natural beauty of your voice and range will come through. Stay with it.
Roger
Thank you so much! I had no idea such tightness existed in my throat! Is dryness a part of it, or do I need to drink more water?
Emily:
You’re quite welcome! Yes, dryness is part of as the body is trying to preserve the vocal cords with moisture. Over time this will improve.
Best to you,
Roger
Bonjour Monsieur Burnley,
I found this area of focus in the throat very intriguing. I have been doing music for over 30 years and there was never a focus in this area of singing before. I have also, tried the method and I am much more aware of the physical sensations regarding the swallowing muscles opening and closing. Thanks for the complete insight that you have given to me, into a deeper horizon of singing.
PARIS…
Bonjour Paris!
So glad to hear they are helping you. It also took me many years before I discovered this secret.
Best to you,
Roger
This is actually usefull. I’ve been searching the net all day and your the only one who gave me something different.
I’ve been singin since I was about 7 or 8, I’ve always wanted to sing in front of a crowd but never had the guts to.
I will deffinetly work on this.
THANKS ALOT ! :]
Noelia,
I’m happy that you found me! This is a compilation of about 30 years of work, so I’m glad that it’s helpful.
Best,
Roger
Hi Roger,
Thank-you so much for this video, I’m looking forward to more. I am getting ready for a performance after not singing for ten years. I am feeling good about the decision to sing again, however I’m a little anxious to get my voice back in shape and while working on my songs did notice tightness in the muscles that you are talking about. So its time to exercise my voice. What do you suggest as a good warm up? I have little time – two weeks.
Thank-you,
Sher
Hi Sher:
Good for you! Try not to do too much too fast. Warm up everyday or even a few times a day but never to the point where you start to push. Each day it will get better.
Roger
Hi Roger,
Thank you for your wonderful demo. I have been thinking about it. I am a songwriter and read and loved Geoff’s book “Songwriting Genius”. But I can hardly stand to hear my singing voice and even went to doctors and was told nothing is wrong with my vocal chords. I also have allergies which makes it even worse! Anyway, I would like to buy and try your course. I only have AMEX, a personal check or money order! Would you take one of these forms of payment?
Best,
Marian
Hi Marian:
Thanks so much!
Yes, you can use your AMEX or check at the site: http://getsingingmadesimple.com/
Go to the Paypal option and you can use them there.
Best to you,
Roger
hi! roger i have questions for you..my falsetto is weak how can i improve, enhance and exercise it?
Hi Michael:
If your falsetto is weak, as you think of it, that indicates there is far too much air going through your vocal cords. You don’t want to push to try and correct that for it can damage your voice down the road. I always like my clients to try and develop more of a connected tone. As you gain more control of your voice that will begin to happen.
Roger
MIRACULOUS TIP!! i have just started using my head tones effectively, but i had to figure it out on my own. This SINGLE tip sums up the solution all by its self. I just started doing this drill today so i can tell you how its change my voice yet, but i can just ‘feel’ how it can help me in the near future. Thanks SO much, i’ll be looking forward to more from you later!
That’s great Roice! Thank you so much for letting me know.
Roger
Hi, I’ve been developing my singing since eight grade. People been thinking that I simply cannot do singing because I’m hard of hearing, but I love singing! I feel encouraged by this lesson, because it really helps! I definitely want your CD’s, so I can share my love of singing!-without being embarrassed. Tried your technique and for once I sound okay on a recording I use on a computer, and I hope my first solo will go well because of it!
Keith:
That is so great to hear! Keep at it and you will continually improve. The fact that you already heard a difference in your recording is a big step. I’m sure all the videos here and the ones to come will help you even more.
Roger
hi Roger,
thanx for all these vidios it helps
how can i make my voice stronger
i like singing to leona lewis but i cant hit the high long notes any idia how can i reach them. when i reacord myself singing my voice goes high and kind of outa tune, and i cant get the normal tune, when i try to sing lower it sounds really out of tune.im 15 and iv always wanted to sing since i was little. how can i make my voice sound better i like singing to leona lewis.but do you think the song is too hard to sing for a 15 year old. songs i sing too are happy, bleeding love, crying your hart out by leona lewis
Hi Amy:
Yes, you will get there! At 15 however, you are still adjusting to your changing voice and the way you might have been able to sing when you were younger has now changed. What we need to do with you now is incorporate using a bit more of your head voice and developing a very strong middle or mixed voice to be able to sing those types of songs. Allow it to grow gradually and don’t push to try and get to the high notes. It will begin to develop. Be sure and watch all the videos posted here.
Roger
I have been learning the classical singing all my life (I am mezzo- soprano), and I am required to sing in classical style for the classical choirs. If I learn this technique or practice this exercise will it affect my classical voice in a way that I wouldn’t want? Otherwise this seems like a great technique, I’m looking forward to hearing from you later.
Hi Sophie:
No, it will not affect your classical voice in a way you don’t want, it will actually help it. The basic technique for physically producing sound in all styles of singing is the same, it merely gets adjusted to create the correct effect for the particular style of music you want to sing. Generally for more classical you’ll incorporate more head voice and greater opening resonate places, and in pop, rock or modern styles you keep the resonate spaces a bit more closed.
Roger
I’m having some issues with this exercise – I’m trying to feel the swallowing muscles, but the movement of my jaw makes it hard to tell if they’re moving or not. What should I do?
Hi Drew:
Try to not open your mouth too much as you’re doing the exercise. First, you should really feel where those muscles are by swallowing or going into a yawn. When you locate them, you’ll know what they feel like when they push down and that’s what we don’t want. You may feel a bit of movement but not where they are really pushing down or hard as in actually swallowing.
Roger
wow, this works, but im having a bit of trouble on the muscles not falling. how can i train them so that they ont fall?
Hi! I did as you asked and my swallowing muscles don’t come down when I sing a song with the nay nay nay’s but when I sing it with words they keep coming down and I dont know why. Do you know what the problem is?
Hi Sofia:
That’s a very good start! Also, try singing the song with your mouth slightly closed and your thumbs under your jaw so you can tell when they are coming down. This is just an exercise so it will not sound great while you’re doing it. After that, let go and sing the song normally. Each time you do it you should experience more progress.
Roger
are still saling your program on here? because i cant find were to order it.
Hi Shomari:
Yes, it is currently available at: http://getsingingmadesimple.com/
Roger
Couldn’t get the 85 minute to work!! Did anyone record it? I’d love to see it!! Someone please let me know!!!
Hope every one had a great weekend as I did. Gigged Thursday thru Sunday. Ready to sleep now .. : – )
Thanks in advance for your help.
Michele
Hi Michele:
There will be another one this Thursday. You can register here:
http://www.webinarsmeetings.com/singingworkshop/
See you then!
Roger
Sorry left out a word .. Couldn’t get the 85 minute webinar link to work!
Thanx a lot for your videos! I thing they are helpful, though I haven’t made a big progress yet. I’ve been at a dead point in my vocal development for the last six months and I felt that I was doing something wrong but I couldn’t determine what it was. Now I see that it’s all because of my larynx moving around. Now I’m working on relaxing it and my swallowing muscles. I’ll let you know when I have a greater progress! Thank you for showing me the right direction!
Thanks so much Kirill and I’m so happy it made sense to you. Be patient with it as it takes a little time to change your old habits.
Best to you,
Roger
Hey
I can’t really seem to completely stop my swallowing muscles from coming down during the nay nay nay nays, there’s been a dramatic difference in how much they come down but they always come down a little bit. Am I still doing something wrong?
Thanks
Zac:
You are not doing anything wrong. That is pretty much the way it starts to work. You’ll get more improvement each time. As you go higher try to think more of “ney” and don’t push too much sound or air.
Roger
Wow Roger, you look like you know alot and are expirienced. Im going to work on the vocal exersise and i hope it realy helps me on my range. Im workin on going higher pitch.
That sounds great Tariku. Keep us posted on your progress.
Roger
Thank you so much for putting up these videos. I have just started watching them and I am going to use them as part of my exercises. I am a lead singer in my band and I have been singing for about 2 years now. I have never taken a voice lesson and I haven’t done many exercises either. My goal is to get a lot of power in my voice, expand my vocal range and improve my tone quality. I am very determined and consider singing a passion, I just want to strive to get better.
Thanks, Dan
Thanks so much for your comments Dan. I’m pleased these videos are making a difference.
Roger
Hi Roger! Unbelievable! I have never heard this! My problem hasn’t been breathing but swallowing! Thank you. I have been experimenting with this and it’s working like a charm. Ya know, I have always thought of singers as very emotional individuals when they sing….but what you just said showed me that they have to also be such mentally focused individuals….constantly thinking and being aware of their physical. Thank you so much! You are great.
Thanks Jame. I went to many coaches for years who focused on my breathing when the problem all along was the swallowing muscles. I’m so glad you’re getting this now.
Roger
WOW that really helpt. Im so happy
Cause i always try many stuff but now you are the best ive tried. Thanks
Im from Sweden but i understand every word you say. Im 13 years old if you want to know that
And thanks youre the best
Thanks so much Karolina. I’m so glad they helped and you’re at such a great age to start getting this. Best to you,
Roger
Hi,
I watched this a couple times,
but I can’t seem to stop the muscle from dropping.
Everyone else seems to get it.
Christine:
Do not worry, they will stop eventually. Everyone else has probably experienced the same thing, just as I did, but with practice they will stop. Don’t push at all and don’t try and go too high. When you start feeling them come down, use less sound or just stop and only do they parts where they don’t come down.
Roger
Roger, do you think you could specify on where exactly to put your thumbs? I can’t really tell where you’re saying to put them.
I’m currently involved in a school musical and in show choir, and according to these wonderful comments, I am convinced this will improve my vocals for them both.
Thanks!
Hi Crimson:
Your thumbs should go under your jaw so that you can feel if your swallowing muscles are coming down or not. Try to locate them first by swallowing or going into a yawn. Then when you practice the exercises they should not come down. It will take time for that to happen but don’t push to get anything.
Roger
Unfortunately, with dial-up internet, the video is taking too long to load and I’m tying up the phone line. My sisters sing soprano and I have always sang alto/tenor. On a good day, I may reach the A or B above Middle C. I always figured I never could sing any higher. Singing is believing. When I can afford it, I will purchase your program.
That sound great Bekah! You’ll be surprised at how much more range you’ll be able to gain.
Roger
Hi Roger
Im a 15 year old guy in South Africa. All i have ever wanted to do is sing and perform. Will you be coming down to South Africa sometime. I would love for you to be able to coach me!
Warm Regards
Sean Wessels
Hi Sean:
I’m working on traveling to different locations. We are waiting to see what cities want me there the most! Put in your vote and maybe I’ll be there.
Roger
Hey Roger
I cant believe the difference (My muscles in my throat are nto feeling as tight as before).
Just a question: Whats the best way to extend your vocal range and get your ear in tune to allow you to pitch correctly
Warm Regards
Sean
Hi Sean:
Glad it’s working!
Be sure and watch all the videos on this blog. They are under each article. Typically when you are going off pitch it’s because of tension and pushing to try and reach the notes. As you start to relax the muscles that are getting in the way, your hearing and pitch will start to improve.
Roger
Hey, Roger
Thanks for the video man, this really helps.
I’m practicing with it now and I’m glad you posted this.
This has been my problem for awhile for more of the higher notes, but I didn’t know what to do.
Thanks again.
Your amazing Roger thaks for all the help this really hepls
God bless
Hi Roger
I’ve been aware of your Program for a few weeks and to tell you the truth, I’m really impressed with what you have shown on these videos.
As you probably know, many of us your admirer are non-English users, and we would be grateful if you can have a script version for each of your video.
Once again, great work Roger, thanks so much.
Roger, First of all I just wanted to thank you for taking time to actually share your advice with all of us! Im 19 now and Ive been singing since I was 5, I really needed to see this video. I had become so discouraged with myself because it seemed everything I tried did nothing to improve my voice…I took some singing lessons and even that did nothing. I’m practicing with this exercise now and I look forward to learning more from you! Thanks so much! God bless!!
Thanks for letting me know Christina. I’m so pleased they are helping you. These techniques definitely work and you will improve. Keep us posted on your progress.
Roger
This is great I finally found somebody thay could help me. Thank you so much.
Max, you’re very welcome! Thanks for your comment.
Roger
This is definitely one of those “Silly Singer Faces” ha ha, but I think it really helps =] thanks!
You’re welcome! And eventually you won’t need the funny faces
Roger
Wow. I felt a difference instantly and my throat doesn’t feel like it’s closing up on me now. Thank you thank you!
Hi Roger i am new at this i use to sing in the choir at my church and in the childrens youth group i havent tried yoiur technique yet but i am going to. I dont want to wake my mom though LOL but you seem to know what you are really talking about because i did the thumb thing under the chin and i swallowed and felt the muscles go down. So hopefully when i try this i will become a better singer. Thanks so much God Bless!!!!! Ashley Dawn Franklin
Hi Ashley:
Yes, you will definitely improve after using it for a bit. I’m so glad they were helpful.
Roger
Hi Roger…I’m 16,so i wonder can i do anything with my voice?I’m afraid that this will have a bad consequences on my voice and my singing….When i sing,i feel some little pain. That’s the reason why i searching singing lessons on net, because obviously, I do not do something properly.
P.S Sorry for my bad English
Darko
Hi Darko:
Yes, the pain is a result of some bad habits, which can all be corrected. Do the exercises easily at first and don’t push. In time it will get better.
Roger
I roger Ibeen saved for six months Ilove to sing but don`t know how .i want to sing with the choir in my church, need to know if this lesson is for people like me who can`t sing need to know if this lesson will help me.please send me a message. Thank you and god bless
Hi Annie:
Yes, the course will help everyone. People start at different levels but anyone who stays with it will improve.
Roger
Hi, so I’ve been trying this exercise. It works with the “nays”, but when I sing the lyrics, I could feel the muscle tense up again. How can I fix this?
Hi Gia:
Try singing the song with your mouth more closed and your thumbs under your jaw so you can feel when the muscles are coming down. This is just an exercise so it won’t sound great while doing it. Then let go and sing the song normally. Each time it will get better. You can also do the song itself with just the nay, nays and then go back to singing the song normally. Let me know if it works.
Roger
Hi Roger,it sounds good, cos that exactly my problem.
however I cant get my swallowing muscles to relax during the exercise( ne ne nei…
What Im I doing wrong?
What should I do or visualise to get the potential out of this exercise?
Thanks for your time.
Keep it shining
vince
Hi Vince:
It may take a bit of time for them to completely relax. As you go higher, use less sound and air and try and think that the vocal cords are just getting really small or thin to hit the higher notes.
Roger
Hey! I liked the video, but I feel that I can naturally hit high notes. I have been told that I sing in my head voice but I cant do that if I want to sing publicly. Can you help me stay in my chest voice?
Hi Maddison:
Yes, that can be done. I like to think of it as bringing more chest sound into your head voice and developing a strong mixed voice. Be sure and watch all the videos here.
Roger
Hey, Roger. Thanks for sharing your secret.
But I think I didn’t understand the exercice. I should feel no tense under my thumbs? Because I feel the muscle tensed up when I sing those “nays”, even if I’m making faces.
p.s.: I’m a baritone (E2-E4) and my falsetto sounds like a horn.
Hi Chris:
You may feel a bit of movement but when you start to feel the muscles really push down, you should not go that high quite yet. Think of thinning the sound as you go higher and that may help. Watch the other videos here and I’ll have more to address that.
Roger
Dear Roger: I received your CD set Singing Made Simple 2 days ago, but I lost the introduction/
instructions sheets that came with it. Can you please re-send those Sheets? I will be happy to
compensate you for any charges incurred. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Thomas C. Raimondo
Hi Thomas:
You can email support@singing-made-simple.com and they will be able to email it to you.
Roger
hello i am really good at singing and really love it.
i am asthmatic and when i sing it sounds like i sing out of my nose instead of my mouth and i can hit high notes. people say i have really great voice but the only problem i have now is how i sing, and where my words are coming from.
i really want to know a secret for person who sings through their nose instead of their mouth.
please get back to me, thank you.
Hi Syvonnie:
You have simply developed a habit of singing and probably speaking where your sound is being produced too far back in your throat and that makes you push the sound through your nasal cavity. This can all be corrected with proper technique. Be sure and watch all the videos here for more help.
Roger
Hi, i am just wondering if even though you have a terrible voice, and i know you said all singers were bad at first but that was just there tone not there natural tone that therre voice makes when they talk, if you can still sing well enough to make people go wow when you sing, and would it even be possmake it to the big time on the raidio with a naturaly bad sounding voice even bad sounding when they talk. and i would just like to add in i talk normally as in no lisps ect. its just the voice i was born with.
Hi Brandon:
You must first understand that producing the voice is a physical process therefore anyone with the ability to speak can develop a great singing voice if they take the time to do so. The key is understanding how the voice works and developing good vocal habits. Yes, everyone is born with different abilities but that shouldn’t hold you back if you are persistent and determined to master it.
Roger
Hello Roger. I’ve stumbled upon this site, and I must say, it’s spectacular. I’m really looking forward to trying these techniques. I did this exercise, and I already felt a difference. I have a horrible time trying to hit higher notes while projecting. They always come out forced and strained. I’m not a professional singer, although I’ve been singing since before I learned how to talk. I went through a choir class in middle school and messed up my voice, because my teacher favored sopranos. I was and still am not a soprano, but I tried, and I hurt my voice. I just started to get it back, and I’ve noticed it’s getting really great, not to be vain. But you’re so insightful, I can tell I’m going to learn a great deal from these videos. Thank you for making them.
Hi Kait:
Thanks so much for your comments and I’m thrilled the videos are making a difference for you. Stay with it!
Best to you,
Roger
Hi Roger.
I must be doing it wrong, because for some reason, I can’t sing. At all. So I looked for some help, and found you. I was amazed when I read this, but now I cannot hear a difference, even after trying your trick for a while. o.o I’m sure it’s my fault and I’d be grateful if you could kinda help me out there, like explain how exactly to do this technique right. I guess I’m just used to torturing my voice for years because of having no one to teach me how to do it right. xD Thanks a lot.
Hi Brandon:
I’m glad you found me. Be patient with yourself and watch all the videos posted here. In time you’ll start to understand more and your voice will definitely improve no matter where it is now.
Roger
Thank you Roger! Im a singer in the process of completing my demo and was told to try exercises to improve my tone. Im wondering though if Im not supposed to feel any movement at all on my thumbs? Thanks again!
Hydee:
You may feel a bit of movement in the beginning but the ultimate goal is to not have the muscles really push down as when you’re swallowing or going into a yawn. Give it some time.
Roger
Hi again,
alright, so now I’ve watched all the videos on here. They all really helped, I’m already hearing a difference. My voice still sounds like a jaw vise, but at least not like a rusty one anymore. Thanks a lot for making these videos.
Can you tell me about how long it will take me to get good if I practice every day? Thanks
Brandon:
That’s great to hear! You should feel more results everyday as you use these. From your description, I would also add that you might try putting your hands on the side of your face, your cheeks, as you do the exercises, and try and think that you will relax more and let the sound come through easily.
Roger
We did this in my choir class. It was so funny seeing everyone make those faces. Its fun though.XD
Hi Autumn:
It is pretty funny at first:-) After a while though, as your body adjusts, you won’t need the faces at all.
Best to you,
Roger
hey roger
no matter how hard I try or what way i say the “neys” I can’t get those muscels to relax and i feel them coming down, especially when i get to higher point in my range. Could I doing something wrong?
Hi Katie:
No, you are not necessarily doing anything wrong but you probably have been using those muscles for a while and it will take time for them to relax. The fact that they come down more when you go higher in your range is an indication that you are pushing too much. Try and use less sound and air as you go higher and they will start to relax more.
Roger
thanks mr.burnley that really helps i want be a great singer when i grow up so yhank you for helping me along it makes me feel like i am A GOOD SINGER LIKE PEOPLE TELL ME I AM
Hi Roger!
This video is only one exercise and I can feel the difference.
Through this, two amazing things have occured:
1) The tone of my voice is really coming through more boldly.
2) Singing from the diaphragm came easy, but I never understood why my throat strained especially singing the higher notes. Now it doesn’t strain my throat or muscles, and I feel like I could sing for hours on!
Thanks!
Alvina:
That is so great to hear! Because you got this so quickly, you’ll even get more results.
Best to you,
Roger
Hi Roger,
Thank you for this very important information. I did this exercise but I don’t really find much change in my voice. Maybe I’m not doing it correctly, however I will do this exercise more and I will let you know if I have improved. Have a great evening!!
Hi Karen:
Do a little bit each day and that will start to change your old habits. Just be patient with yourself and it will improve.
Roger
Hi Mr. Burnley!
I’m new to your blog and I love it! You give a great amount of helpful information. Thak you very much for taking time out of your personal life and work schedule to help us singers. Looking forward to learn!
You’re quite welcome Veronica. Thank you so much for your comments.
Roger
Hey Roger im really happy with this can notice a difference im just wondering doing this excercise will it come naturally into a song then?
Hi Rob:
I’m glad it’s working! Some of it will come into your singing each time. It is a process especially with songs that you’ve already been singing, so stay with it.
Roger
hii roger… i saw ur video and i start to exercise,, hope it will be great change,, thnx:* Cant wait for your next video and congrats for your new blog:)
Thanks so much Ani. Also be sure and watch all the other videos posted here as you’ll find much more help!
Best to you,
Roger
hi i have major tension and i have tried everything to relax and free the tone but nothing seems to work iv been training evryday for 1-4 hours. Singing is in me i can feel it inside its like breathing through the soul to me its very important and i get emotional because my voice does not release and only tenses iv been training with tension so iv developed a decent vibrato and i canm sing high but i feel it tense but it doesnt hurt only sometimes and i can go high in my head voice aswell but i feel iv been training incorrect because i still have tension so i feel i have a nice tone quality but it doesnt feel free. So i am desperate to free my voice i have high hopes and everyday is like a battle im losing i even use the digastric muscles while i talk its very bad tension i feel nothing can work so i hope you can help me. I think what you doing great and im happy theres people like you in the world please reply and thank you
Hi Gwilyn:
These techniques will definitely help you release more of that tension over time. It sounds as if you’ve doing some things incorrectly for a while so it will take time to change those habits. Stay with it.
Roger
this is a great lesson i learned a lot thanks
You’re quite welcome Sunny. Thanks for letting me know.
Roger
Roger, thanks for the tips on the video. I have a low pithed voice and have recently joined a barbershhop choral group. I’m doing well, but I need the kind of help you give on the video, since i have difficulty singing the high notes.
That’s great Dorothy. Keep working with them and the high notes should start to get better.
Roger
i find this site very helpful i have a problem that i think can be solved here….i seem to have breathing problems in between how can i sing with takin large breathing gaps?
Hi Piniel:
I believe you meant without taking large breaths. You might be opening a bit to much and actually blocking your air. Be sure and watch the video here where I talk about breathing.
Roger
HI THANKS FOR THIS I WILL TRY. I SING OK BUT I SOMETIMES TEND TO CHANGE MY VOICE WHILE SINGING ALONG TO HELP ME SOUND GOOD. I NEED HELP FINDING MY OWN VOICE. I SWITCH NOTES ALOT TOO CAN YOU HELP ME?
Hi Bintalama:
It sounds as if you don’t have the control yet and you are pushing your voice box out of place when you’re singing and that causes you to switch voices and constricts the tonal quality. Be sure and watch all the videos here for more help.
Roger
i need help to be able to sing i can sing a little bit but i wanna sing really good…any tips
Hi Kabreshia:
Be sure and study all the videos here and practice with them. There are many tips there. You will begin to get better.
Roger
You might not like this comment. But, I can say that your video blog is so informative, I don’t think I’m going to have to buy your $197 course
Hey Gary:
I’m so glad you did post that because it proves to me once again that the program is worth so much more! The blog only contains a fraction of what is in the program, and it also comes with many other bonuses and the opportunity to work with me more personally. It also helps those who want to succeed in the music and entertainment industry by providing valuable videos from other professionals. You’ve posted so many times here so I think maybe you’ll want some further guidance. I thank you for all you interaction.
Best to you,
Roger
The easiest form of using the nay nay nay and all of your other techniques for me anyway, is acting like I’m going to shoot a youtube video. When I do that, through my web cam I can see that my larynx is moving or not moving. I strongly recommend this for everyone trying to learn your techniques.
Thanks for your tip.
Roger
Hi Roger,
I am mixed race woman in my early 50`s and i belong to a brilliant Gospel
choir,I love singing, I was born to sing,I feel I need to enrich my voice
to make it sound more Black,I am going to try your method, by using the thumbs.
Sue
Hi Sue:
As you work with my technique you’ll start to gain more freedom and flexibility. As that is happening I would suggest you start listening to those artists you admire or like their sound and try to copy some of their influences without straining yourself in the beginning.
Roger
Can you damage the vocal cords by pushing in too hard on your neck trying to force the swallowing muscles to relax?
Gary:
You actually should be pushing in on anything. You only need to put your thumbs under your jaw to be able to see if the muscles are working too much.
Roger
hello well im new here haha im in a choir already but i feel its not helping me kk i already know how to breath when im singing and the peoblem its that i cant sing louder i sing low and im a soprano i really really want to know how to sing better i love singing and i want to learn and i dont know if i sing good yup that it
Hi Nayalie:
Be sure and watch all the videos posted here. It sounds as if you’re singing in a way that is blocking your air and that’s why you can’t sing louder right now.
Roger
WOW! This technique has really helped relieve so much tension out of my trought!( I don’t know if I spelled it right). But anyways I have a question. Sometimes I do the faces and my swallowing muscles tend to not relax…
Hi Josh:
I’m so glad you’re getting results. Also try pushing up on your cheekbones when doing the exercise and that should help the swallowing muscles to relax more. Give it a bit of time.
Roger
ok thank you im thinking of buying your program because theres a singing competetion i really want to win comming up in a few months do you think in a few months with your program id stand a chance cause im already singing everyday for 3 hours but i still havent got rid of the tension has everyone you taught using the exercises on your program got rid of there tension
Hi Gwilym:
Yes, the program will definitely help you. Everyone who stays with it does release that tension eventually. It all depends on what particular habits you have and how long you’ve been using them.
Roger
l love to sing like never
Hi Roger. So I’m guessing the next video will come out tomorrow, right? Well, can I please have the next video sooner? I just love your videos and singing, that I want the next video!
-Gloria
Hey Roger. I began singing last year. I had been hiding my voice because I was not confident, but when I auditioned for the school musical and got a lead roll, it boosted my confidence a bit. Sadly, I was not taught a good technique, and I quickly discovered my range was limited. I love to sing… It is my passion. I feel pain in my throat when I sing for more than a few minutes while singing a not-so-high tenor part while in choir. This is a fascinating technique you are using here. I have seen a difference, but I am curious about the area in my voice as to where it wants to crack up to the falsetto… Do you have any advice on how I may be able to combine my voices to get rid of this crack? Thank you for your help, great video.
hello,im nine years old and ever since i was about 4 or 5 ive wanted to be a singer.i honestly think that this will work!!!i convinced my mom and dad to let me take lessons for my voice(no luck there yet) so when i older i can get discovered.thank you so much,
cheyanne
sebastian florida
Roger,
when i was younger i used to have an amazing voice but over the years i just lost my touch. i may be more of an alto singer but your lessons made my voice stronger with each time i practice. i really would like to subcribe to anymore lessons you have. thanks again and i hope i that with your lessons i will be back in the spotlight.
Jacquie
Hey Roger I really like that you made a video to help us and I really love the video I give it 2 thumbs up
and I love to sing but my family tells me I have a great voice and I beleive them but I am not confident in me do u know how I can get over this
DUDE THANKS!!! My voice has increased like a MIRACLE!!!!!! I can sing so good now, i used to have a difficulty reaching deep notes but now I’m nearly PERFECT! You have really led me to a new path of singing, with all my heart, I really appreciate it.
Hello,
I recently tried your exercise and I noticed that my voice is out of tune when doing the nay exercise with a song. Is that normal?
Hi,
i was wondering do i have to follow a diet and avoid cold drinks and ice to keep my voice in shape..
Hi Roger,
Thanks for all the videos. I need help regarding my voice because it cracks when I try to sing powerfully, I think I have much phlegm..
-Vanessa
Hi Vanessa:
You’re pushing a bit too hard and that’s why your voice cracks, and it also causes your body to produce more phlegm because of the tension. That can all be corrected with learning the proper technique.
Roger
Hey, roger i like the video.. i only started singing im not that good yet.. although i have goten a bit better i feel like theres not much better i can get from here now, and im kinda discuraged to keep going. Is singing really something you can develop with practice? or must you just have a natural talent? Im going to keep trying tho and ill try out what u tell me in your videos for sure. thanx.. Peter
Peter:
It is definitely something you can develop. I’ve working with many people who started with very little ability and learned to become really great singers!
Roger
Thank you for video. It’s very good and helpful.
I wanna have more powerfull voice.
Hope with your lessong I’ll can to do this
Thank you
Hi Juiya:
Yes, you will! Keep practicing and be sure and watch all the other videos posted here.
Roger
wooow it is amazing
how about priave lesson and how much it costs
Hi OG!
Thanks so much. You can also visit my personal website at http://rogerburnley.com/ for information on my private lessons. I look forward to working with you.
Roger
Hi Roger,
I’m Andy aged 16
I just have some questions about singing
you know how on youtube some people sing covers of different songs and some of the voices are amazing and so beautiful and the tone is just so clear and precise and produces such a nice sound
i have a music perfomance assessment in about 5 weeks time where i will choose a song and sing it in front of my school, how would i go about getting my voice clear and making it sound really nice?
The video with the exercise of the nae nae nae drill, does that really work and how long does it take before i start seeing results?
I can sing as I sing for my church band but my voice needs to become more clear and have a better tone. Sometimes when i sing a song with a lot of high notes my throat feels that soreness as it feels like its strained so I’m guessing I need to improve. Is it possible for me to become a really good singer with a really nice clear voice and how long will this take?
Thanks so much, I’ve been searching everywhere for answers and you look like your the only hope for me to get better as all the exercises on other websites and on youtube are difficult and complex
thanks
Andy
Andy:
Thanks so much for your post and you’re such a mature 16 year old! Your voice is also still going through a change so it will take a bit of time for you to start developing the technique of using a bit more of your head voice as you go higher and start to develop a mixture. You can definitely do this and you will indeed get to the place where your voice is both pure and powerful. Watch all the other videos here as well.
Roger
thanks it really helps
sometimes I feel the muscles and sometimes I don’t
I’m gonna try to do that more often
Cyril:
It may be inconsistent at first but just stay with it and they will relax more.
Roger
Hey Roger,
I’m glad that I finally found a legitimate video for my singing. It is awesome of you to post these highly-effective videos. I just have a question about this video on where to direct the voice while I do this exercise. Do I direct it towards the head or the face while the swallowing muscles remain stationary?
Hi Ryan:
I’m so glad you found me as well! You might first only get a sense of it more in your face or mask, but after a bit and as the muscles relax more I would like for you to try and get a sense of it being in your forehead.
Roger
Thanks so much, I’m gonna try this to some Panic songs!
It will work Amanda! Give it a bit of time and let us know.
Roger
Let me see if I am hearing you. When u do this exercises with the thumbs under the jaw where the swallowing muscles are located, is there suppose to be any tension at all in that area or as less as possible? I have my thumbs under yet I still feel tension vs a letting go of the muscle especially when the jaw moves up and down or…is the jaw suppose to move as less as possible? I am tryin to get this right due to I am trying to rebuild my voice after having vocal node removal surgery, a much needed surgery due to preliminary reports was one of the nodes was cancerous. Praise God it wasn’t after the biospy was done. But help me out in this exercise okay? I really appreciate it!
Hi Tommie:
You should not feel them pushing down as when you’re actually swallowing. You may feel a bit of movement in the beginning. Since you had a vocal nodule, that means you had been using them for quite a while and you also got into the habit of pushing. You really need to do this very easily in the beginning, only go as high as you can without straining or pushing. Each time you should be able to get just a bit more. Your problem is exactly the sort of thing I work on with my private clients and I do a lot of rehabilitation.
Roger
i roger my name is richard i’m 13 and i want to sing like justin bieber how to i do it?i;m doing the na na na na . how long before i see resaults please reply.
Hi Richard:
You’ll see results very soon if you keep practicing. I don’t know your voice so I can’t say that you would sound like Justin but we already have him. We now need a really great you!
Roger
Thanks a lot! At first I thought it was stupid, but when I tried it out it worked first-time! Still, this only helps me hitting the right notes at the right time. My singing voice is still not good enough.
Be patient Samuel. You’ve only just begun and as you get more comfortable with it, your tonal quality will improve as well.
Roger
Hey Roger..
Wow it really great Roger i mean its really amazing how my voice or hw i cn now sing those high pitched notes more easily thanks ans i m waiting for ur next video thanks ……
That’s so great Shashank! You’ll even see that it keeps getting better.
Best,
Roger
Hey Roger..
Thanks for the tip. I joined my high school’s chorus in the beginning of the year and I really enjoy singing. I would really like to get better at it so and now I will be able to sing in higher pitches with this exercise thanks to you.
Great news Chris! Choir was one of my most fun things as well. I’m so glad you found these now.
Roger
hi im andrea jackson and iluv the fact that you take out to help others singing is my lyfe and i wanted to be disover be fore i became 18 but im 19 now i love to sing but i think i need some vocal lesson to go higher on notes and to be able to hold notes for a long tyme
Hi Andrea:
You’re still quite young and now that you’ve started working with these, you’ll definitely develop more. Stay with it, you have plenty of time. And you’re welcome!
Roger
Hey roger , im 12 and i wanna sing with a lot of strength and powerfulness lke Demi lovato,if i keep doing the nananana will i get to the standered of demi lovato voice?
Hi Cheryl:
You will start to develop your natural, strong singing voice using these techniques. You really don’t want to sound like anyone else, just you, but better! Stay with it.
Roger
Dear Roger,
hi my name is Tabatha. The problem is that i am 9 years old.And i didnt really understand waht you ment. But in other ways your video was really, really, really helpfull. because i want to be a good singer like selena gomez and demi lovato thank you so much with your help!
You’re welcome Tabatha. I have had many clients your age so it’s never too early to start. You’ll start to understand it a bit more as you get older and especially as your voice begins to change. Have fun with it for now!
Roger
I’m auditioning for a role on a tv show and i have to sing keep hoding on by Avril Lavigne. I’m a guy and your exercises have really helped me hit the high notes in the song, so thank you from the bottom of my heart.
I love it !!!!!
wow, its amazing that this works and it free learning thank you so very much, I have been trying to find better ways to get my voice going for a while. Thank you!
Hey Roger,I’m Jacob Betz. I’m 12 years old and I just watched one of your email videos. I’ve been singing for about a week and I’ve practiced my exsersizes alot. I think yours will help me. Thank you for the help.
Hi, Roger I have a quick question. Should you sound nasaly when you are doing the Na-Nas? Thank you, your videos are really helping.
Hey just watched the video. I am 16 and am trying to start a band with some of my friends. But of course I just started really getting into singing last summer when we decided this so haven’t had much practice really. I am definitely going to experiment and see what I get. I am probably going to recommend to my friends and hopes it helps because we all have our trouble spots. I am also having a lot of trouble with tone and pitch. Can you help with this as well? Thanks
wow.i was shocked that this actually worked. but you are an amazing coach.it helped me so much.but i do have a problem.i have a deeper raspy sounding rockerish voice that can be compared to janis joplin and mellissa ethridge and pink and i can’t carry long notes whatsoever.but thank you it was very helpful.i preform at clubs and stuff and if i ever get famous i am giving you all the credit!!
thank you,lotz of love, R.R
Dear Roger, I am 12 and I just watched the video, when i do the excercise, if I try doing the Nay Nay Nay, The Muscles Keeps Coming Down So Do I Push It?
my voice is improving, thank you!
I just watched your video and did a little practicing. I actually notice that I engage my muscles more in the lower range. Is that normal or am I doing it wrong?
Hey Roger. I tried doing the exercise and am not sure if I am doing it right. When you put your thumb under your chin to feel the muscle, is it supposed to feel like it does when your mouth is totally relaxed? Like really soft between the jaws and you can push up.
When I voice I feel a little hardness there, and because I feel that I can’t tell if that’s the swallowing muscle or if it’s naturally there when you speak. And I’m not quite sure how to prevent the muscle from coming down. Any tips on that?
Thank you. :3
You’re great for making these videos XD
Nay Nay Nay it’s Coach Roger! I’ll have to work on that fat Albert parody, because that’s all I’ve got so far.
LOL..keep working with it Gary!
Roger
Thanks very much. I’ve been having real problems with tension in my neck which has made singing really difficult recently.
Singing is a big part of my life and without it I don’t know where I’d be, so I’m glad to have found something which I can try.
I hope that this can be the answer to my problems
Thanks!
Hey Roger, this exercise is really helpful;
but what should you do when you reach your breaking point ?
thank you i’ll try you advise and tell you how it goes!
im a newbie, i love singing alot but im only 14 with an unbroken voice, i just want to know is it safe for me? it hurts my jaw after a while and also is it normal that when i try the exercise for the first time and i felt that i was actually controlling my larynx and when i try singing something like whatcha say, Jason Derulo and whaddya say, adam lambert there is alot of vibration and hurts my thumb is that normal??
i also did the exercises and noticed that my larynx only moves when i take a breath, ive been singing for very long since i was about 6 or 7 but is that normal that my larynx is already like that, i never took any singing lessons before and my school music teachers claims that i have a good voice but i cant hit the high notes very easily so any advice?
i tried the exercises and i can still feel my swallowing muscles movieng is there asomething else you can tell me that will help me relax those muscles because i am ready and willing to do anything you tell me to better my voice. by the way i am 16 nyears old and i love singing and i’m told i have a good voice but i sing mostlky bass and i want to increase my range so i can be a baritone and sing alot of the songs that i want to sing when i perform. thank you so much for your time.
Your advise are gold! Can you help me how I make possiple to sing the song Without you (M.C.) at the high notes with turn the voice to chest to head voice?
Thanks so much for posting this video.
I am 13,and interested in singing, and I want to improve my voice.
I have not done any of these exercises yet but I am sure they will help me.
I will recommend your website to anyone who needs help with singing,or is trying to improve.
Thanks again.
Thanks so much AnnMarie. Be sure and let us know your results after you work with them.
Best to you,
Roger

You’re welcome Michlle! It will keep getting better for you. Keep practicing.
Roger
This is great! Can’t wait to experiment further and work on my ranges! Thanks for the video!
You’re welcome Kristen. Be sure and let us know your results.
Roger
Sorry, Roger, But Im still a little confused. Am i supposed to press my thumbs against my swallowing muscles or just touch my swaloowing muscles.
Hi Darrell:
You should just touch them. This is so you can feel if they are pushing down and becoming tight. When you start to feel they are doing that, you should not try and go any higher. As your body starts to relax more, you’ll gain more range each time. Remember, you are retraining your body.
Roger
I love the video very much, and that was outstandfing, and I hope to see more of your video, because it really help.I will email you after I make my first mayment. SIR ROGER there is no other coach I will rather receive lesson from than u because I feel so move just watching it and that drive me more to do this (singing)
Sandra:
Thank you so much and I love your enthusiasm. I so look forward to working with you.
Best,
Roger
I’m 13 and me, my friends and family think that I have quite a strong singing oice, but I can’t really control it when it gets to a part of a song where the note is high, my mum says that I have a unique voice so I need to be careful whilst singing, she’s even thinking about getting me a vocal coach to help me! This video is good help, but I feel a bit silly doing this because my mum and dad walk in the room and they see me and they think I’m crazy! Is there any more less embarassing ways to improve on the pitch of your voice? Thanks for all your help! xx
Hi Emma:
Sometimes the exercises do feel a bit silly and embarrassing and I used to feel the same way. You simply have to remember your goal and not let what others think of you get in the way! They will begin to notice the difference and then it will all be worth it.
Roger
With my singing, i start to sound like im sick and i start to lose my breath. Is the swallowing muscles the cause of this? Im really trying to be a great singer. But in my website i have one video of me singing and it would be great if you could tell me if im doing it right, haha. But, thankyou for this video i hope it helps me.
Hi Demi:
It sounds as if you’re a bit too constricted when you’re trying to sing. These videos will help you to begin to change that. Be sure and watch all of them. There is a beautiful voice inside you with time and practice.
Roger
Wow! That’s so cool! It immediately made a difference! I took two years of voice lessons in college, and finally got frustrated and gave up. I just wish I’d known this concept. I couldn’t believe the change it made in my tone in just five minutes!
i love singing u are gonna make me much much better well i hope so
You will definitely do it Chloe. Stay with it.
Best to you,
Roger
I like this it is kool i am going to have so much fun in here.
Great! Be sure and let us know how you do.
Roger
I really can see really feel the difference with the nah nah nahs and can hear some difference in my voice.
Great Kiki! It will continually get better also.
Roger
I don’t really understand how to do this right, or to know if i am doing it right.
Understand it though.
i need to get better at warm ups!
Dustin:
Keep watching and practicing. It will start to make more sense as your body begins to adjust.
Roger
Hi Roger !
I am a music student from new zealand and vocal is my instrument and I have never come across any technique as great as this one. This technique has significantly helped me, I really appreciate your work
this is great advice. i’m into some heavier music that involves screaming, but i’d like to be able to sing as well as scream. this technique is really helpful tho, and its really the same thing as another one i learned called the over the pencil technique, where you put a pencil in your teeth and try to sing above it. thanks a lot tho.
Hi I’m Yu and I’m really happy that I had stumbled on your site. I’m 13 years old and I love singing! (Well, I really haven’t take any voice lessons here in our country) I THINK I can do sing with the tone but when in high notes my voice cracks up. (Can I really call it that I can sing in tone when I have my swallowing muscles going down?) Will this ney ney exercise help me in hitting those high notes?
Sorry for my bad english. ^_^
But anyway, I gonna try this exercise and I’m really grateful that I watched this video! Thanks!
hey Roger,
i am 13. i do not know if this is what your theory is for, but my problem when ever i just sing I’m alright and calm but when i want to record and publish it its always goes especially when i am trying to sing my favourite song by beyonce, listen, then really starts to put me down.can u help please because want to put my videos on my you-tube account so i will get noticed and share my talents with others.

You’re very welcome Cody! Thanks for letting me know.

it’s kinda hard but it really helps:) thanks:)
Hi CC:
The more you practice the easier it will get. The fact that you are noticing that it is helping means that your are on the right track.
Roger
Hey Roger I’m Brandi I’m 16 years old and my dream is to become a singer. Just Like Beyonce. I want to train my voice & get that soul and power like Beyonce has. But i don’t have the money for a vocal coach or singing lesson. So can you give me tips to singing so i can be A PHENOMENAL SINGER:)
Hi Brandi:
All of the articles here have videos with them so you can get more tips and be able to practice. These are all free so I do hope you receive great benefit.
Roger
I’m really hoping it’ll work. Thanks for the tips. My dream is to become a singer so i’ll keep practicing what you said. Wish me luck.
Stay with it Jayme and you will definitely do it! The only way to fail with this is to stop.
Roger
Hi, I just had a quick question about your lessons. I know that you learned under seth riggs. I also know that brett manning learned under seth riggs. Do your vocal lessons differ from those of brett manning’s singing success lessons? If so, in what way?
Thank You and hope to talk to you soon.
Hi Alex:
I really haven’t seen Brett’s program so I’m not able to comment on that. I will say that everything that I use gets guaranteed results and I’ve used these techniques with thousands of clients. There is no vocal problem that I can’t find a way to solve. Once difference in my program and all the others is that when you purchase it you will have access to me personally on the members site so that I can give you personal direction. It’s the closet thing to actually having private lessons.
Roger
Hey there, Roger.
I have been singing passionately for about 2 years now (choir, voice lessons, show choir, competitions, etc.) and not once have I been told this secret until I subscribed to you! I’ve only done this excercise a few times and I can already hear and feel a great difference in my voice! My vocal chords thank you. (:
Hi Kenzie:
That’s great news! It will also keep improving. Thanks so much for letting me know.
Best to you,
Roger

But when i sing i always run out of breath..what shall i do?
Ray
Hi Roger,
I used to sing before having a thyroidectomy last year resulted in my right vocal cord paralyzed. For six months afterward, sometime I could even speak loud enough for people to hear me, let a lone singing! Last December, I had a vocal cord medialization surgery in which the surgeon put an implant in my voice box. After that, I can speak much better but cannot sing like before. I asked him about the vocal exercises to strengthen my voice but he brushed me off. So I am glad I found your blog. I am going to practice those exercises you suggest, not to be a singer but just to be able to sing for fun once a while with the band of my two brothers. Thank you very much.
Hi Roger,
i have been singing for about 10 years now, im 21 and began real early with a singing teacher. The exercises that u use have helped me to real punch out my notes easier.
thanx heaps for the help.
I am going to practice this technique! Thank you for the video….I will be contacting you shortly to see about taking private voice lessons….
my voice is always acheing. i cant sing high notes for the songs that i wanna be able to sing.but your exercise is helping a little but it still hurts.. thanks for all your help!!
Hi Roger,
really great methods
thank you very much this gonna help me soo
god bless you
im am so going to practice this technique i can already hear a diffrence with my voice thank you so much i cant wait for the next video
you are the best
hey, Roger! I have seen your videos, but i haven’t tried…. beacause i need to ask a question first before i try it. I’m a girl, but my voice is lower than that of any other girls. Is it still possible that i can sing? A lot of people have mocked me about my voice over the years, but i want to be a singer….
I have been having a great deal of difficulty with my voice. I have been singing most of my life but in the past year I have lost all of my range. After singing first soprano for 50 years I suddenly found myself having the range of a mediocre first tenor! I hope this will open some new ways to unlock my voice again. Thanks!
Hi Roger, I thank you so much for the tip. But my problem is i am not sure where to put the thumb? you said in video under your chin and in yr email conversation says under your jaw. Please tell me where exactly to put the thumb. Also if larynx moves while swallowing or yawning does that means one should not drink water while singing? or too much yawning is bad for singing?
Also if the over straining to vocal cords causes phlegm does that means getting phlegm is a bad thing or damaging to your vocal cords? Actually after spitting out phlegm i feel better and be able to sing with ease. so please help me understanding. i really appreciate your help and time.
Thanks for this tip this was very effective
Sir Roger, I’m really having a hard time trying this out, since I haven’t formally studied how to sing, and I can’t and don’t even know how to find the sound around my forehead yet… But I’m trying my best since I’m planning to audition to an entertainment company this year and I know they wouldn’t accept a girl who only has the looks… Thank you very much Sir for sharing the info and I’m going to practice hard every day!
Thanks so much Roger! Lately Ive been having many problems with my singing voice. You addressed all problems I had and now I sing better than ever!!!
Thanks!
i just wanna know which celebrity have you taught?
Hi Roger, my voice is sounding better one question my voice is not very clear when i sing how can i fix it? email me the answer.
I practiced the technique and i here a better quality of voice and tone exactly as you said. Thanks!
This video helped a little bit but I’m still not sure if it will completely help my voice. I’m capable of singing the middle tones but i sound awful when i sing high and low tones. What can i do to fix that?
thank you!!!

Thank you for your answer
TAPIERO
Right now i’m in the office, maight not be able to practise it now, but will definitely do that when i get home. It sounds to me as a good exercise as i have been involved in quite a lot of exercise before now. Keep it up Thanks so much for really helping outnad i hope we could have more of this.
Using the “naynaynay” exercise to go through a song as a fantastic idea! I do similar sorts of things when I’m learning a script for a role — different exercises such as saying only the vowel sounds of my lines, singing them, etc. I am currently cast in a ten minute musical (pretty much my singing debut), in a role that was written for an operatic soprano. Well, I’ve been stuck in the alto section all my life and I actually have a rather lovely contralto/tenor tone. No formal training in my life. But I’m doing surprisingly well with the songs and I have a feeling if I start practicing them with the “naynaynay” exercise they will get that much easier and I’ll sing them that much more powerfully and beautifully. Thank you so much for being so generous as to make free vocal exercises available!
Roger,I need to say you are the best teacher i ever met, actually it worked like magic on my vocal cords and now I sound like a proffesional,You are my god Roger,Thanks!
Hi Roger
Can you tell me how long I should do these exercises for each day?
I am looking forward to seeing what happens.
Thanks heaps
i cant get my swallowing muscle to stay up
Thank you Roger i believe that is will really help me
I am also really happy about how we can watch videos to improve our singing
Thanks.
the swallowing muscle keeps on coming down when i changes my face also! help!
Hi Roger:
It might be that you have been using them for quite some time and have developed certain habits. Go at it very easily at first, use less sound as you try and go higher and eventually they should begin to relax more. I had the same problem so I know first hand that it works.
Roger
Hey Roger!
Thanks for the information! I’ve been working and strugling on how to control those muscles. I love to sing, it’s my dream to perform and have my voice to be heard, but I still have those minor problems that make a big difference. Every once and a while I’ll get the tone that I want, but I still end up straining. I don’t want to settle for a carreer that is just a passion. Singing is what makes me, I’m a writer also, I just don’t know what it takes to really make it big. It would be great to talk to you or even work with you. Please E-mail me or contact me on my youtube account. It would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for the video!
-Dakotah
Hi Dakotah:
Thanks for your post! It would take individual sessions with you to be able to tell exactly what is occurring that prevents you from getting that great tone all the time. This is what I offer in the members section of my program. I’m only able to respond as I can here on the free blog but hopefully these videos will help you with practice. If it is truly something that you want to take to the next level, it really takes a commitment with some private attention to your voice. Please visit my personal site for all the services that I provide.
Best to you!
Roger
Roger, den so where the muscle is? near to the chin or quite a distance from it?
Because the angle ur video is not quite rite. Cant see the place u put ur thumbs is
Roger:
Right under your jaw. When you swallow or yawn you’ll feel exactly where they are.
Roger
Hi, Sir Roger i have a problem while singing, when i sing my head/chin rise up.
Is that normal?
Hi Arian:
It is normal for that to happen but it is also something that we want to correct because as you do it, you are also pushing your voice box up and out of place.
Roger
Hi Roger ,
I have this little issue in singing. I can sing high but I can’t sing low.
any ideas? By the way thanks for all the helpful videos!
Maria
You’re probably pushing your voice box down too much to try and reach the lower notes. Watch the videos here but that is also something I explain in my program or private lessons.
Roger
Hey Roger,
Thanks for the tips, i can feel a change in the way i sing and also i cant feel my body changing with my voice.
I want to ask you if you have any tips for when you hit a high note because as i hit the note my voice seems to become a little shakey. Please write back and tell me your idea’s
Jess
Hi Jess:
Keep working with what is here and as you gain more freedom with your voice you’ll also have more control over the shakiness.
Roger
Hi Roger,
I find your techniques very helpful.
One of the big problems I experience, is finding good easy-level songs to work with. I would find your sessions most useful if you were to take students through a number of songs to place your approach in context. I believe we learn fastest through emulation, through following someone’s example – at least initially.
Cheers,
Don.
Hi Roger,
Thanks for the video, but i have a problem oy own. I tyr to get vibrato but it won’t come out well. What kind of exercise do I do or anything can iI do to make it better?
wow! thank you so much… this is really helping me a lot, its helping me so much with my opera singin style aswell because i feel i can hit the notes a lot easier than i did before, thank you and i cannot wait to hear more
Hi Roger,I enjoyed the video and found it very helpful.Looking forward to more helpful tips.Thnaks,Sandra.

hey roger,
my name is Jessica and i really wanna learn to sing i have a voice you can tell but its really hard for me to just sing pretty. I’m 16 and its really hard for me to i just wanted to know if there is anything in the Ohio Dayton area where i could go that’s cheap because my family is not very rich. singing is my dream and i really wanna learn better. so if you could answer this message for me that would be great.

It definitely will Editha. Be sure and let us know.
Roger
hey roger, how are you?thanks for this video i will practice it.i’m from suriname(south america)we dont have any pro singers

i will keep practicing.i cant wait for the next lesson XD
again thank you so very much…also thank you for the invitation for the online workshop
Hi Mike:
You’re very welcome. Also, the reason you hear more tone after working with the exercise is that it allows the air, which creates sound, to come through more easily. It will keep getting better as well.
Roger
as of now i still had a doubt , but i think it would be helpful so i’m for sure will try this exercise and i’ll inform you. “THANKS”a lot….
They definitely work Ferdinand. It just takes practice, patience and persistence.
Roger

Even though I’m only 14 years old, i wanted to sing better, Ive always embarrass myself when trying to sing high notes to my favorite songs, normally i wont i just sing in my normal voice. But I plan to take your advice and blow my friends away! I’ll becoming back for more tips!
New follower,
Cameron
That’s great to hear Cameron. It will keep getting better for you as you are at the age where your voice is still changing. Let us know your progress.
Roger
Hi roger,
thanks for the tips…
My dream is to become a well known professional singer and be found,
i have no contacts i do music as a gcse in school and live an ordinary life but singing is always on my mind 24/7 and i know i wouldn’t want to do anything but sing.
And i think your tips will help me out alot thank you.
Hey Roger , I`m worried that I might be doing the na na na excersize wrong. Could you give me some tips on maybe how to get it right. Its simple but i just want to know if im getting it right the first time. Thanks
Hi Roger,
I am very interested in your tips but very confused! I live in the UK and took up singing a year ago aged 52. I recently took my Grade 3 exam and passed with high merit. However, the tone of my voice needs some improvememnt and my ability to reach high notes without tightening needs improving too. My teacher is always nagging me about ‘lowering my larynx’ to make this happen. Singing with a yawn. This seems to be the exact opposite of what you suggest? I find it almost impossible to understand what is meant by lowering my larynx, despite the fact I am sometimes praised for doing so…the truth is I have no idea what I did to achieve it and it all feels the same to me! So I guess, I first need to understand why you say the opposite (my teacher is not the only one to bang on about lowering the larynx).
Also, I am trying your exercise with my thumbs and am finding it very difficult to stop the muscles moving whichever face I make!!! I can still feel some movememnt and tensing in there. I will keep trying but wonder if I have misunderstood. What should my thumbs feel. Should I be pushing a little with them? Thanks Claire
Hey, Roger? Is it?
I tried it and I think it’s working.
Thanks
Continue helping others to help them follow their musical dreams too.
God bless.
-Amy
That’s great to hear Amy! Thanks for letting me know.
Roger
Roger,
thank you for this tips, you are so kind to share this secret to all of us. God bless you.

Mr. Roger, I am so glad the Lord lead me to this site. Last weekend I was discourage about sing on the praise team: because I could not sing in my head and my lack of confidence singing high note I could not do. I went to severe others site today, but they did not give me what I was looking for.And I knew I did have any funds to pay. Since I lost my job, car, and now I am depending on my children and friends to help me as God lead them until he make away for me, I am 54 years old and it is hard to find work. I want to go back to school to father my education. but I don’t know what my passion is: I do know I like to encourage people and make them smile.
Oh, before I forget once I click on your site I close out every other site and begin to listen to you every thing you say and it make sense. I start today a littie bit following your instruction and I will continue until I hear a differ I so glad you allow God to impress your heart to get on the blog to help those who can’t afford to pay right now. I know He will pour you out a blessing that you want have room enough to receive it as you continue to bless other like my self.
Thank you very much God blessing on you as you acknowledge him by faith.

Wow. I signed up for your videos because, well, I can’t afford hundreds of dollars for a coach. And I never thought about this. I’m immediately going to try this and I really hope it starts to put me on course. I’m definitely going to keep watching. You really seem to know what you’re talking about (this is something I’d never thought about. And it seems obvious now. I’m kicking myself for not guessing)
Hey roger, thanks heaps for all the tips ive been practising and i think ive stopped cutting off my air. I have two more questions though, after I reach those notes my voice is shaky I cant keep a stable note. How do i get around that? Also how do I learn to jump between notes in songs without having to re-adjust my pitch to suit if you know what I mean?
Hey Roger, I must say that I have finished the first video and to my avail I might have caught a mistake I have consistently been doing for while now.
You see, my old vocal coach used to tell me all the time that the Cricoid muscles must always be lowered in singing. Basically, I think she was telling me my Adam’s Apple should always be lowered. I’m almost positive that is the exact opposite of your teachings. I’d like to know if that is semi correct or some truth is in there somewhere.
I’m confused as to what is what. Any help would be admired. Really confused, but it seems like you know what you’re talking about.
I’ll keep coming to this website for other tips, because they are displayed very professionally and expostulated in great manner. Thanks.
Dear Mr.Roger thank you very much for this Wonderful information.I live in Sudan and i am a Singer ,I am willing to improve my singing skills and who knows maybe we will meet eachother one day.
all my best
